Hello guys, I m thinking in buy a new ultra wide monitor to work on cg animation... But do also play some games with my lap ... Gtx 980m current card . Actually my current monitor is a acer with a 1440p. Or 2k resolution and be able to play Rainbow six siege and Overwatch with some high decent settings with 60 fps..

Will the ultra wide 3440x1440p will affect the gaming a lot ? Or should I get the 2560x1080p resolution? I heard that 34" it's better with the 1440p. Could you guys help me out ?

3440x1440 has it's pros and cons. i have a Dell U3415W and i really love it. u just have to keep in mind that it is a 21:9 ratio screen so it'll have less support from games and movies. the 2560x1440 screen is a 16:9 ratio so it'll work just like your 1080p monitor, but with more pixels/screen real estate. it'll also be easier for your 980M to run.

i'm not too sure about CG animation, but video/audio editing really benefits from 21:9 because of the extra horizontal space. i can fit 3 full sized browsers on my screen so it's basically like having dual monitors without the borders. i don't mind the bars when watching stuff like Youtube, so that's not really a con for me. alot of modern games are starting to support 21:9 and i love the experience it offers. there are also programs like Flawless Widescreen that can push some games to fully support 3440x1440 resolution. i've had friends try Rise of the Tomb Raider and GTA V on my Snow White (see sig) and they're blown away by it.

The ultrawide will have to drive about 25% more pixels than your 2560x1440 monitor, so if you're able/wanting to play games at the higher resolution, you will notice a performance hit. At the same time, you almost certainly will notice a productivity boost in your professional work by going to the larger screen. I'm personally of the school that prefers having two discrete displays, but I can certainly see the appeal of an ultrawide.

I had an LG 34" 3440x1440 curved ultra-wide. I can say I would go with 3440x1440 hands down but like it was mentioned, you will take a performance hit so you will have to lower some settings. You can always lowered the resolution for your games as well. 21:9 is beautiful for side by side windows.

Just wondering, how much fps will affect that 25% of more resolution in games with the same settings that I have right now? From 60 fps will drop to 50? 40?

my partner has a flat 27" 1440p monitor & i find it realy strange to look at in games (being so big), i would suggest getting a curved screen

I've played with ultrawides at local retailers and they just don't do anything for me. Maybe if I could get a G-Sync one for less than $500 I'd consider it but, meh.

You will be waiting for a very long time. You can't find ultrawide 3440x1440 for anywhere near $500 without G-sync. I managed to score an LG 60Hz one for $499 though through a fire sale (posted here by someone). Great monitor for productivity. Not greatest for gaming, but it's my second LCD. My main is G-sync.

which G-sync monitor do u have and do u actually see/feel the difference in gaming?

i overclocked my Dell U3415W to 80Hz and it's been performing pretty flawlessly.

That was my point. The only way I would be interested in an ultrawide would be if it met those criteria. I'm not going to lose sleep over the fact that such a monitor may not be available for a really long time, if ever.

Yes it will be around in 40-45s most likely if you were getting 60fps before.

I have the Acer Predator X34 and an LG 34UM95C.

Seeing and feeling the difference yes I can. Although it varies by user. Some people say they can't tell the difference. When G-sync wasn't working with DOOM I noticed it pretty instantly.

But be warned, going with high refresh, IPS, and G-sync will make you an LCD snob, and empty your wallet at the same time.

    What happened to the PG279Q?

In the end how much did each of them cost you? The 2 monitors you currently have!

Hey, thanks for the answer! Have a quick question for you... Let's say I get the display and use the native resolution of the ultra wide display when I'm working on my stuff.... But if I want to play video games with the same resolution and same ratio that I current have, which is 2560x1440 with 16:9. Will I have same performance that If I were using a 2560x1440 display? Because I'm happy with it. And don't mind the black borders while playing on the ultra wide monitor.

Will be the same performance choosing the ratio and resolution as the one I current have ? Sorry for being redundant

    Thanks for the answer
