I know Acer already has one but I saw the advertisment from Nvidia yesterday about how Ultrabooks weren't ultra without the 640m.
Does anyone know of any other Ultrabooks that will be coming out soon with Ivy Bridge and 640m?
-
I was wondering the same thing. I also heard that AMD's new Trinity chip will have a better APU than Ivy Bridge. They are supposed to cost a couple hundred dollars less as well. I am going to be eyeing one of those up. I just need a Ultrabook to play Diablo 3.

there's new zenbooks coming up, one of them with the 640m:
Asus' budget Ivy Bridge Zenbooks: UX32Vd with Nvidia GPU and UX32A, both starting at $800 | The Verge
and then there is gigabyte's ipo:
Gigabyte unveils U2442 ultrabook line
other than that i'd be very much interested myself to know who else puts the specs in the decks. supposedly 75+ new ultrabook designs coming up according to intel. who will release the ultrabook line ivy bridge cpus some time early june. good time to need a new machine in any case. -
I also would like an ultrabook to play diablo 3
. If the gt 640m could max it out it would be perfect.

That gigiabyte is actually pretty compelling. What I really want is a thin and light gaming machine and this looks pretty close to perfect. With a 14" screen, at and 3.31 pounds and .81" thick (source: the verge) it seems small enough to be trivial to take with you anywhere. The 900p screen makes the larger screen size more compelling as well (although a 900/1080p 13.3" would also be fine). Not only does it have the reasonably capable GT640M but it also includes a standard voltage processor. Even though it does not come with an ssd standard, that is actually a bonus as one can install their own ssd for cheap (vertex 3 120gb is on sale for about 120$ right now) and still have included hdd to either sell or use as an external. Not to mention that it also has a thunderbolt port for an egpu solution.
To put things in perspective (based on notebook check), to get a faster video card in a laptop (other than the 11.6" clevo that has its own host of problems) we need to get into the 15.6" laptop range. This 3.31 pound laptop will have better graphics performance than the 5.78 pound 1.39" thick 2011 15.6" dv6 (which already had great performance for its class with the 6770m). This years 1.28" thick 5.67pound 15.6" dv6 should have about 30% faster graphics but with a 51% thicker and a whopping 68% heavier chassis (anyone who has tested out laptop weights will know that this 68% will actually make it feel 3x or 4x heavier, from trivially movable with one hand to being a struggle with 2.
Of course a slightly heavier slightly thicker laptop (like say a .9-1" thick 4 pound (importantly still light enough to easily move with one hand)) 13-14" laptop with a gt650m would be even better for this purpose, however there does not seem to be any available. Maybe someone will announce such a laptop with the new (and seemly better) amd cards. -

I know this is an old post, but Asus Transformer Book will be coming out with a 640. No release date yet, but from what I have read, it looks like it will be coming out with the second wave of Ultrabooks after Win8 drops.
Acer timeline M5 also has the 640 but has a sad 1366x720 display. -
i think asus U500 has the GT 650m with DDR5

The Gigabyte looks like a winner.
"The ultrabooks also feature a 512 GB SSD and a hard drive with a capacity of 1 TB, a backlit keyboard, 4 USB ports (two USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0), HDMI port, MiniDisplay Port and D-Sub as well as a SD card slot. The displays are 14-inch with 1600 x 900 pixel resolution.
The new ultrabooks will be officially launched in May or June 2012 and will cost around 1000 USD." -

Before you go dropping any cash, be aware that Gigabyte is testing a GT650 in the U2442. Also, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see Thunderbolt on such a machine.

Are these Gigabyte ultrabooks even going to exist or be available in the States? It seems Gigabyte models never materialize. Those are perfect specs actually.
Only place I see it is a place called Dynamism and have no clue who they are.
Dynamism - Gigabyte U2442
Their specs say U2442F-CF 1 is the only one with 650m with i7-3517U. Although the only one when you look at the individual specs that has it is U2442F-CF 2
Price is a little high though IMHO. $1099 for i5-3210m/640m up to $1239 for i7-3517U/650m.
It looks like it uses an mSATA SSD with option for added HDD/SSD. I hope the SSD/HDD are easy to upgrade.
The i7-3517U would be the way to go though since it's only a 17W CPU if you want best battery life. And to be honest a 640m is more than sufficient for this type of machine. Wonder if they will use DDR3 or GDDR5 (I think 640m only uses DDR3)? I may end up buying this thing because it's pretty much EXACTLY what I've been waiting for, except would prefer 13" instead of 14".
Anyone know if the screen is matte or glossy? RAM upgradeable or soldered on? -

True, and I did a little more research and found:
- One review said display was glossy but another said it was matte.
- Notebookcheck indicated it has two SODIMM slots, so RAM should be user upgradeable
- Dual fans, one or CPU, one for GPU (thanks Gigabyte)
- Assuming SSD is user upgradeable, but stock comes with mSATA only. -
It was definitely a matte display, the screen just isn't as crispy. I've seen better 1368x768 screens, but for the 1600x900 I'll compromise.
I did not get it through Dynamism when the CF1 models came out, but the prices were the same for them and excaliberpc.com - so there's another US source should it come back in-stock. -
I just chatted with ExcaliberPC and they said if I order the U2442V it should ship out tomorrow.
I'm tempted... oh so tempted.
One thing I asked is about dead/stuck pixel policy. Apparently Excaliber only honors mfg warranty/return as they have none of their own, so waiting on response from Gigabyte. This is THE laptop (well want 13" not 14") I've been waiting for. Debating to wait for the 650m version not due out for another month. But seems the 640m should be more than adequate. The 640m *IS* GDDR5 though right?
