Alright I just purchased my new hp:
    T9400 2.53ghz core2 duo
    GeForce 9600gt 512mb
    3gb ram
    vista 64-bit
    160gb 7200rpm drive

I began to play steam games and found myself 'dropping frames'... or so I thought. I toned down the graphics to almost minimal and still had the same amount of choppiness. I updated the drivers, and still no luck. I am wondering if this is a processing issue rather than video, or possibly an issue with the 64 bit os translating down to the 32 bit steam platform??? If anyone knows anything on this issue or knows how to solve it please help!!!
    Thanks,
    Stephen

There apparently is a 64-bit version of Half-Life 2 available on Steam.

There isn't a specific 64 bit version seperately packaged as far as I know. If it detects 64 bit OS, it will run in 64 bit mode. On the initial loading screen (when you launch the game, before the menu comes up), you will see a little rounded corner rectangle at the top of the image that says "64-bit mode" or something to that effect. I've seen it myself, and all I did was install the Orange Box, no special 64 bit anything.

Makes sense. I knew it was available - didn't know the specifics. I don't currently use a 64-bit OS as my current computer has a whopping 2 Gigs of ram.

Try tweaking your Audio settings/sound card drivers. I've heard that this can cause stuttering.

Are you running on battery or playing while plugged into AC outlet?

Check your power settings to make sure they are set to Full Performance.

AC adapter. I don't know maybe the video card isn't good enough... I can't really figure it out. I'm going reformat and uninstall vista for xp this weekend, if you guys think that could help.

Yeah, be a little more specific. Were you running anything in the background? What game? What drivers?
