Hey guys I've been following this discussion thread for awhile and it's making great progress (finally). Bryce@Intel has been instrumental in pushing this issue through for us and we've finally had a unlocked driver tested and shown to function properly allowing custom resolutions and refresh rates.
Testing on the driver is now complete and the changes have been pushed through to be implemented into upcoming graphics drivers.
Soon all laptops using Optimus and Intel graphics will have the ability to run a custom resolution and or overclock their display to run refresh rates higher than 60hz.
If you can please register over there and make your voice heard and feedback. The louder we are the quicker we will see these changes implemented into upcoming driver releases.

Ionising_Radiation ?v = ve*ln(m0/m1)
Does this potentially mean nVidia Optimus users might possibly be able to use G-Sync?

Alrighty. But custom resolutions and EDID override, effectively making the Intel driver on par with the nVidia/AMD drivers is a great thing to have. That's two less negatives with Optimus; I look forward to seeing updated drivers over the next month or so in Intel Driver Update Utility.

I also doubt this does only come in effect when the OS is loaded, It shouldn't work in the BIOS, So this doesn't add to any use since why would I run a machine with 120Hz on iGPU are you kiddin me brah
??
For me the iGPU itself was a waste of die space on the i7's
Plus if they even make it to use from the BIOS It's dangerous since they may enforce the Craptimus Gimp-o-rama on all machines with BIOS licensing from the Redmond Mafia M$ & Intel, Ngreedia....
This is a very bad news to the 980M / 1070 /1080 class single GPU machine users, another genocide level like the BGA push, Brace yourselves the ****storm is comingLast edited: Aug 14, 2016 -
nice, definitely a positive trend for machines suffering from craptimus ^^

Well, it COULD be worse- you could have AMD's Enduro to deal with instead.....LOL.

true that, although i had made a very positive experience with enduro's predecessor, a manual software gpu switch in a previous 13" acer i owned
the machine still works flawlessly, although 7 years old by now, but refurbished by me and being used by my nephews
