I remember when the UE3 engine was being shown off on the 6800 Ultra. It turned out the 6800 Ultra could not even run UT3. UT3 was delayed and now the 7800GTX/7900GTX were out. They said oh yea "7900GTX", the perfect card to run UT3. This wasn't the case either. It took at least the 8800 series to run UT3 at 1080P no lag. I really hope this isn't the case for this engine.

Their are way ahead of their time... as sad as that is, it the same case for the CryEngine 3

lets hope it's playable on the mobile market.. wouldn't mind some lightning effects that actually work this time

Man that is a friendly looking engine to work on, who ever came up with the editor is a genius.

Wouldn't surprise me... the editor is really well designed, basically idiot proof and so easy to use for modders

Lets hope it is. It used to be that game engines were ahead of GPU's, but lately GPU tech keeps improving and game engines arent. There isnt that need to upgrade your GPU when something from 2 generations ago can still play new games on high.

This years E3 surely has showed some stunning engines, tech demos and games! I am actually very very excited, which I haven't been in the past E3 as everything that was coming up there, was something every already knew about and was expecting so highly..
    - 2012 and 2013 is and are going to be the years of gaming ;)

2014 and on, the tech demos could be used on higher end pc's, but until the next generation consoles are announced next year, developers are not going to make very many games with, for example, UE4

as it stands right now I can hardly imagine any laptop withstanding the power of the real UE4

The only thing I would expect from Next Gen consoles is to support DX11 features. That's it. Not much of a jump at all and likely still a few years behind PC now. I would think it's just a quick refresh.

UE4 is fully deferred rendering and the demonstration was all in real time. Also Epic Games focus is the lowest denominator, they want their engine in the most games possible. So I don't see why a UE4 won't run on current laptops now, if you just turn off tessellation for example. UE I think has always run very well and fast, I don't see why Epic Games would stray from this now.

The only thing I'm worried about is UE4 favoring Nvidia over AMD.

Also I didn't see anything that really wow'd me, I think CryEngine 3 is just as good as UE4 from what I've seen so far.

Wow that demo is unbelievable. The amount of quality and attention to detail is unmatched and that footage from the game engine is comparable to something rendered straight out of a hardcore 3d program like maya, however it is live game from the engine rather than being rendered footage. Epic games knows what they are doing, and I really look forward to seeing what is created once this is out. I have fiddled around with the Unreal Development Kit in the past and I find it very easy to use and full featured, I'm sure that U4 is going to continue with that. Hopefully the UDK will be updated with the features from U4, as the current UDK is basically a stripped down version of U3 from what I understand.

I am wondering how well they'll optimize this to run on the lowest denominator hardware, I've read that it takes about a GTX 680 to run it right now, hopefully that the generations to come will fare better. As for consoles, they can't jump high enough in the hardware department without a premium cost so it'll be interesting.

No game developer uses all the features of an engine. For example CryEngine 3 supports POM, yet they didn't use it for Crysis 2. Frostbite 2 supports all of DX11, but Dice did not implement MT for BF3 and tessellation was minimal. If you wanted to max what UE3 could do now, you can make a GTX 680 cry also. Developers will take advantage of what they need and want and they will do their testing through beta etc to determine what is best to reach the most gamers.

There is no point whatsoever to produce a game that will be only run by those with GTX 680. You want it to run on computers even few generations old like the GTX 480 or the HD5870. This is a cross platform engine, so even if someone makes a PC exclusive with it, the engine is still primarily optimized for consoles.

Everyone has learned CryTek's mistake with Crysis, including CryTek. A really difficult to run game will have low sales, it becomes a novelty. No one wants to pay for a game where there is a chance you can't run it. Piracy or just no interest will be rampant.

The Unreal Engine 4 demo looks great. The most promising feature is not the eye candy, however, but the simplification of the systems so that artists and level designers can do a lot of the more simple stuff themselves.

Hopefully as a result we will see a few more elegantly designed games with lots of emergent gameplay features.

As stated by moviemarketing, the point was not the graphical/visual achievement but merely the ability to have such customization and control while IN game, amazes me how much detail dedicated fans and clan groups and such could make, imagine the possibilities. Graphically overwhelmed or not, it's clearly a step forward as this just made it a whole lot easier to make maps, characters and a base set of construction !! I am still amazed to be honest, great work by Unreal's team, Epic Games ;)
