I currently have both (but I lost the CD key for ut3 :'( but anyways, I felt the need to say that ut3 was a piece of junk with bits and pieces of 99 and 2k4 mashed into it. Warfare was a complete letdown. I see NO assault mode-like objectives in it and it's basically a renamed version of onslaught. I'm only stating my opinions, but i wanna see what other people have to say.![]()
Oh and i tend to go back to 2k4 more than ut3. It's just faster and more fun even thought the graphics might be dated.

Honestly, I think UT3 was a cool stylistic move, and I still like the gameplay. I've been playing UT since Unreal, and I've liked them all. (Aside from 2003)

i like 2004. more guns, the redemer!!!. it felt faster. and for its time it was amazing. UT3 actually has medicore graphics compared to some other recent titles.
-
UT2K seemed faster. I do miss the assault modes, but I actually like Warfare.
More of a parallel move for me. Maybe there will be a UT2K8. -

i don't mean to go off topic but i liked unreal championship 2 the best it's had melee weapons and all the characters had something special about them the only big big big con is it was only for the xbox

BenLeonheart walk in see this wat do?
unreal championshi* o,o
Personally i love UT99 over all...
but... since i have a kickass machine, i can play UT3...
i loved UT2k4. -
Assault mode are the best...although I love warfare too . Having the tank is awesome
-
I forgot about the Xbox Exclusive "Unreal Championship 2". Man, that was amazing, the 3rd person view, smashing people with double-ended melee weapons.
-
-
It certainly looks very next-gen-Unreal to me. -

in ut3 everything max at 1280*720 i get 30fps with vsync
if i set it to 1280*800, the health pack looks weird i can take a screen shot if anyone can help me out -
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
however, i just can't afford to buy a non-assault mode UT.
im waiting for ut2k8 as well. doesn't matter what they call it. i just want assault mode. -
I too have been a hardcore Unreal fan since Unreal Tournament came out, 99 in my opinion was the best, 2004 was pretty fun, and UT3 is still fun but its missing what made the other games so great. The vast amount of content. Whats great about Unreal Tournament is the mods and the custom maps. There must be at least 3-4,000 custom Unreal Tournament 99 maps.
There are plenty of different characters to play as too, thats what made it so addicting, almost no server was the same. With Unreal Tournament 3, all the populated servers run stock maps which get boring after a couple months, especially when there is roughly only 12 death match maps, and about 5 Capture the Flag maps. The UI on UT3 is also terrible compared to UT99 and UT2k4, supposedly Epic said they were going to work on the UI a few times now, hopefully that will be fixed in the next patch.
TL;DR
Unreal Tournament 3 is a good mix of both UT99 and UT2k4 but it lacks content, features, and a good UI. -

I only played the demo of UT3 but I like UT2004 alot more, the modes I like like onslaught, the faster paced action and it was more of my style.
I am not one for pretty graphics and realistic environments I like that old school computer generated environment that UT2004 has. Plus it runs great on any system pretty much with unlimited amounts of stages and mods. -

I played UT2k4 demo for nearly five months; played the complete game for a year and a half. UT 3 lasted only four days on my machine.
-
You guys have pretty high standards. The thing is that after UT4 it`s hard to bring new game types and still make the game enjoyable.
I`m a true UT fan, all of the series were awesome for me. -
I cant stand people whining about UT3, its UT2K4 thats the most different as 3 is much more line with 99.
Regardless, the maps are INCREDIBLY made and theyre huge too, thats what makes the game so awesome -
dondadah88 Notebook Nobel Laureate
i have play any other game except ut3 and unreal championship 2 and they're both great games
-
I do miss Assault mode myself.
Otherwise, UT3 is great!
A certain lack of content like maps though....
-
Thund3rball I dont know, I'm guessing
Been playing UT3 for a couple weeks now and aside from contsantly losing my connection (no idea why, only happens in UT3) I think it's just as fun as UT2K4. The graphics look fantastic and run great on my 8600M GT.
No game published in 2007+ is going to run as well as a game published in 2004. In the consumer market games push hardware, it's always been that way. People were freaking out about HL2... and Far Cry would barely run at Max on hardware at the time it was released. If hardware pushed games we'd all have just bought UT2k4, Far Cry and HL2 last year :\ -
I have both and i played ut3 a lot when it first came out, but the problem with it is that it doesnt have the community 2k4 has. There are very few servers with custom maps on them and most of those are empty. Thats the reason why i recently went back to 2k4.
-
One big problem for me in ut3 was the empty servers. I mean, there's like 10000000 (exaggeration) more servers in ut3 now than ut2k4, but more than half those servers were empty when i was playing. I also miss the community that 2k4 brought out. As for me, i'd take gameplay over graphics any day.

You're just trying to justify losing your CD key by saying UT3 is a crappy game. You know in your heart it isn't but that's human nature don't worry about it.
UT3 rocks. I think it's great and once invasion is fully operational, the game will kick even more ass. It runs crappy on my comp however. I should have waited to buy the game when the price becomes lower, invasion is ready, and i get my new laptop for college that will be able to handle the game. -
erhmmm. i beg to differ? I just wanted other peoples' opinions about ut3 and ut2k4. I'm not trying to justify me losing the cd key. And why put words in my own mouth when you have no idea of what my intentions are?
-
I think he's just messing with you, Twisted.
-
Oh..well...I apologize for the hostility. If you were even joking...

-
Tournament 99. The only true UT game in my mind.
-
LOL. If you guys stick to one game, you won`t enjoy modern graphics in the same neat UT world.
UT 99 never gets old, but I reeeealy love UT3, it`s so awesome, more and more with each passing gaming day -

UT3 was a big letdown for me.
UT2K4 was heading in the right direction UT3 didn't live up to the hype.
Expected much more from it based on all the early buzz all the development peaks, fell short, and I'm kinda cold on the franchies now after about 2 years of weekly UT2K4 after it came out.
Not the only one with an issue, Quake Wars dissapointed too, but expected more from UT3 (including assault mode).
It's 'good', not bad, but that's not exactly a ringing endorsement, it should've been great. -
Quake Wars... I love the game, but god the graphics are almost embarrassing for a new game.
-
I just bought UT3 today because my xbox 360 broke (stupid red rings) but so far it's an awesome game! I've never played any other UT games but this one is definitely great in terms of graphics, gameplay, and game modes.
I'm just getting used to it right now but I think I'll be sure to continue playing even when I receive my replacement xbox. -

UT3 plays an awful lot like UT99, but how is that a good thing? I mean UT99 is a fantastic game, but if I want to play that...I'll play that. It's still a pretty decent-looking game.
UT2k4 was a great step in the right direction, rectifying all of the problems with UT2k3 in one fell swoop while offering a boatload of new content. It played faster and the art direction was top shelf.
UT3, on the other hand, has that terrible UI, an alarming lack of content, gameplay that's really a step back instead of forward, really did get rid of Assault, and probably has the worst single player campaign in the lot. By shoehorning in a horrible story with equally horrible characters and then deliberately forcing Warfare mode as hard as they can, it just gets tedious. Then the final nail in the coffin is the awful art design, which basically just looks like a glossy Quake II (no, really, look at all that brown, gray, and green) mixed with the terrible character/armor design of Gears of War.
The graphics for the game ARE pretty impressive and the game's VERY well optimized, but the problem is that the game is too fast-paced for you to really appreciate any of the details, so it just goes by in a shader vomit blur that winds up melting any distinctive styling together. So when the one thing it could theoretically leverage over its predecessors is hard to appreciate, it kind of just makes you want to go back to UT2k4's simpler, cleaner, and more varied art design.
So UT2k4:
Better art design.
More content.
Better gameplay. -
I agree that UT3 sucks, I think we already had a post and we write the reasons why.
In my opinion all UT's after UT1999 suck to various degrees. Ut2k3 at least brought its' radically new graphics (at a time) to the table, whereas
Ut2k4 is essentially a vehicle addon for 2k3. I don't want vehicles in my fps, if I want vehicles I will go play consoles. Also the rooms seem to be oversized because it takes you forever to run across a single room, that's just bad game design. -

Just like UT2K4 I bought the collector's edition as a 'thank you' for previous works, despite my ill feeling about the UT3 demo. I was hoping the shipping game would be greatly improved considering all the last minute work they were throwing into it up to RTM. But whoa, what a let down, especially compared to my feeling about UT2K4 after I boght it (liked it so much bought a copy for a friend to play).
Anywhoo, it's not a complete write-off, but I almost would've prefered an add-on pack/update for UT2K4 personally. -
-
I like UT3, and since I`ve finished the storyline, I know there will either be an add-on or a newer UT someday.
Maybe it`ll bring back assault... -
TheGreatGrapeApe Notebook Evangelist
Yeah I hope they do bring out a UT2K8 or something similar and tweak UT3 soemmmore. There's potential there, just left me a little empty. However while I pre-ordered UT3 SpecEd, I'd probably wait for reviews of the next version before buying it to make sure it added what I want to see fixed or hopeful add more than I want and add stuff (good stuff) I didn't expect.
-
I've played the Unreal Tournament series since the original, and although I don't own Unreal Tournament 3 (I'm saving up to get it), I've played the demo, and 2004 is better. There's just something about playing Onslaught and decimating people with the redeemer. It makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

do lots of people still play UT2K4?
