Wanting to buy a good online multiplayer game. Just want to know a couple of things about UT3 first before getting it:

1)Will it run well on my MBP?

2)Is there are large amount of players online at all times?

Opinions on the game would help too, thanks :)

Yes and yes :) I think it's not a huge upgrade. It's basically UT2004 with better graphics.

You will be very happy with Unreal Tournament 3. :D

The UT series cannot be missed if you're a PC gamer. Remember to use the alternate fire on all the weapons, and change tactics/weapons depending on the situation.

You should train with bots offline before you jump into multiplayer, as some elite players can be extremely potent with shock combos. Unreal Tournament has the best bot AI in the business, so a lot of people are playing offline right now instead of online. But expect a big boom in the multiplayer population when people are done training with the bots.

Thanks for the info. I hear UT3 has a decent single player campaign and plan on playing through it to get a hang of the game first :)

Should read "had"...UT3 bots do a terrible job defending.

This is a non-quantifiable statement and should be taken with a grain of salt. It's always been my experience that when people buy a (mostly) multi-player only game, they immediately assume that they will pwn so they jump on-line right away. Experienced players know that "Training with bots" only helps you beat bots. To say that there is some huge hidden player base for UT3 out there just practicing away with bots...this is something that can't be known. Even if they do exist, they may never come on-line....

I'd recommend Enemy Territory:Quake Wars if your looking for an in-depth multi-player shooter. It at least brings something new to the table IMO. UT3 just feels like a prettier UT2k4 to me, which means almost 4 year-old gameplay (even though I loved 2k4). Uless you have your heart set on UT3, I'd recommend getting the demos for both it and ET:QW and making up your mind that way. I'd add TF2 to the list, but I think it suffers from some of the same problems as UT3, and theres no demo (that I know of).

I don't really like UT3 that much either to be honest for online multiplayer. I think Team Fortress 2 is much better. I've spent more time playing that game online than any other. Plus, you could get the Orange Box for the same price along with several other great games.

    Just my two cents.

Get Ut3 you can't go wrong, The game is a blast to play, even the instant action games are a blast, great way to relax after work or school. It's a game you can play for years, not just run through it and it's over!

I'll have a small review up in a few days. I personally don't find it to be great though I never really enjoyed the unreal series so I'm probably biased.

Who said that? UT3's single player campaign is the worst of the series.

Honestly, I really like the Unreal series, but UT3 is a huge letdown. You'll get the same (or better) gameplay from UT2004, although it won't be as pretty.

Though if you've never played UT, you'll probably love UT3. But in any case, my favorite of the series is still UT2004. UT3's barely seen any play for me since I got it, there's nothing new about it, and what has changed is seldom for the better.

All true, it was indeed a let down, especially when you compare it to the previous Unreal Tournament games.

But you cannot deny that the game is just insanely fun. That was the whole point of UT, crazy multiplayer mayhem with powerful futuristic weapons. The most important thing about a computer game: is that you have fun playing it.

Sorry, I should have clarified what I was trying to say. By "training" I meant getting used to the weapons and the map, not training to beat other people. The weapons and the maps are pretty complex and you might get confused if you have never played UT before like the OP.

About the "hidden" player base, I was referring to Mark Rein when he said that over 50% of people who bought UT2004 never played the game online. So I assumed that since the game has only been out for a few weeks, that a lot of people are still playing the single player campaign against bots.

But you were right, I should have made it more clear that it was my opinion, rather than a known fact. :D

UT3's SP is the BEST of the series.. the other games practically didn't even have an SP..

MP is fantastic, tons of players, and it's really fun.
You can't review UT3 if you never liked the others, that's just a simple fact, people who don't like run and gun and dodge and kill, can't enjoy it..
I LOVE it. It's well worth every penny you pay for it..

I got this game about a week ago and I must say that it's tons of fun to play. The last game in this series that I played goes all the way back to the original Unreal so if the gameplay and weaps are the same as UT2K4 or whatever it is then it's new to me. I've played pretty much offline at this point since I'm still learning the game but looking forward to online action. Played through the instant action maps and I'm now working my way though the campaign. Well worth the money IMHO.
