I emailed with Sabio Digital about replacing my 6600 with a 7600 since the MXM's will match. I was told that the power requirements were too differnet, but i was under the impression that MXM made it all fun and games to toss in another MXM...

if the requirements were different, then if you got it anyway..had it installed..etc..the computer would just reboot when under heavy 3d load.

im not sure on the requirements for notebooks, but i was also under the assumption that any MXM1 card would work in place of another MXM1 card.

guess not, unless this is a rare case..

    anyone else have similar experiences?

    pb,out.

this is what i think too. I just think companies dont want people buying modules cause it keep us from buying new notebooks. but an MXM is interchangable with other MXM, as long as they are the same line of MXM...

I thought the power requirements were standardized across the same type of MXM card. The problem is, I don't think the actual design specs (specific voltage requirements, etc.) of the 7600 MXM are actually out, and I doubt Sabio actually knows it yet; they're probably just guessing right now. The guy to ask about MXM is the user "Ice-Tea", who runs the MXM Upgrade site. If he ever gets his hands on a 7600 or x1600, you (or maybe I myself) could beta-test the card for him.

That's odd - the Go7600 should be compatible with the Go6600. The would use the same class of MXM, II, so I don't see why they won't be. . .

I know that in ATI's lineup, the X1600 is compatible with the X700 so it is easier for manufacturers to upgrade their notebooks.

yeah. thats what i was thinking. so either Sabio doesnt know yet, or they dont want me to know. but thats why i bought an MXM notebook, so i wouldnt have to buy a whole new one. So, $20 says it'll plop right in.

I know that Alienware is now offering the X1600 256MB in their M5500 - it also has options for a Go6600 256MB - in MXM format. It's definitely easier for manufacturers to update their model line now that we have interchangeable graphics technology.

The MXM/AXIOM formats are really a tool for manufacturers anyway.
