    hey guys

    i recently pruchased a toshiba m70 laptop

it has the 256mb dedicated x700 graphics card

i want to update to the latest drivers, so i downloaded the ATI Mobility Catlyst 6.1 driver(or at least the 950kb little version that determines if its compatable)

so i downloaded that and ran it

it said that the Mobility Catalyst drivers are not compatable with my system?

whats up with that, i have a MRx700 card, it says it supports it.

    my current driver version is..

    8.162.0.0 dated 8/3/2005..

which im sure cant be the latest.

    why cant i update?

Go get the moded drivers from www.omegadrivers.net
They are practically the same drivers, tweaked, and enabled for all ATI chips. That's what most ATI owners use (desktop/notebook).

*** Have your system restore switched on, just incase something goes wrong, so that you can roll back, although I doubt you running into any probs! :)

NO, sorry qwester this time I'm gonna have to go against your suggestion. :D

Even though you have a videocard that is supported your laptop motherboard may not be and blah blah blah, ATI is kinda lazy with mobile support. My Z70Va's x700 128mb is not supported either.

Here is the solution. Go to driverheaven.net and download DHmodtool3. This is a tool that will let you install the Catalyst drivers on your system. Thing is you MUST download the Radeon Catalyst drivers, NOT the mobile version.

So just download the normal catalyst drivers and run the DHmodtool3 and follow the instructions.

I personally don't like to use Omegas, but you can if you want.

    Cheers,
    Mike

Yeah, only certain laptops can be 'checked' correctly . . it's not that your laptop can't use them, it is just that the manufacturer doesn't want you to for some reason, probably some support issue they don't want to deal with.

well i downloaded the omega's....ill do some benchmarking with them, and then with the real catalyst ones.

so far tho all is well, seems to be very speedy!

is it true that the 256mb version of the x700 isnt very common?

i "should" get around 2500 in 3dmark05 yes?

Yeah, the 256MB X700 is rare as far as notebooks go.

You should get about 2700 or more with your 256MB version. That's what I got with mine on stock.

i have always recommended the same link that ikovac posted but he just beat me too it. the official Ati drivers are usually pretty good.

with your latest Ati driver you should easily be able to handle sushi typing! hahahaha,

(see off topic forum if you want to know about sushi typing)

I had the same delima with my Toshiba P-30, so i just ignored it and Installed the Omega 3.8.205 based on the latest 6.1 catalyst drivers. They seem to work better on my machine. My 3d mark05 jumped from 1300ish into the 1700's with the 128 meg 9700
