    Quick question,

wondering what the proper procedure is when updating the Intel graphics drivers on an Optimus system.

I keep the nvidia drivers up to date, but I've never updated the Intel graphics driver (i7-HD3000). I'm assuming I'd need to uninstall the Intel driver, reboot to let windows find a vanilla driver, uninstall NVIDIA drivers, reboot, install Intel driver, reboot then install NVIDIA driver again?

Realistically it could be a case of "if it isn't broken then don't try and fix it" and I should just leave the Intel driver alone, but with a few games not recognising the NVIDIA card recently (and not being able to force them in the NVIDIA control panel for one reason or another, e.g sonic generations) then an update to the Intel drivers may at the very least give improved performance.

any help would be appreciated (and no I'm not going to use dell drivers - they're at least 6 months old)

You pretty much answered your own question.

Ideally, a total graphic driver wipe ie uninstall all Nvidia and then uninstall Intel.

    Install Intel and then Nvidia.

The other method is to extract and install only driver via Device Manager but that method would not update the graphic control so your mileage may vary.
