Does anyone know if the Asus G51 supports GPU swapping like the Sager NP8662 does?
    Thanks!

Also: Does anyone know much of anything about the G60, aside from it's screen size and similarity to the G51? It's not even on the ASUS website?

With all the heat with the current config, why would you ever get a more powerful card for that laptop? The thing is almost at boiling point as it is :). It is MXM compatible i think, if thats what your asking.

I know on the g50 the MXM connector was backwards, leading to an upside-down card if you used a standard one... not sure if they changed that.

Well it's certainly an MXM, 3.0 specifically I'm sure since it's the only one with the required power and TDP for the 9800M GS. Theoretically it's doable as long as it's not a "reverse" style MXM and you could get your hands on the actual card which isn't going to happen easy.

I believe Asus uses their own proprietary MXM for their GPUs, so I think you'd be limited to Asus GPUs.

They sure do...at least in all the Asus's I've seen.

You can't unless they release one.

It's amazing they managed to fit a 260m into a 15.6 incher. If you're thinking of upgrading, just save yourself the trouble and light a fire in your living room.

Upgrading your laptops GPU, even if actually possible, is almost never worth it. Just so you know.

So I know. But I like keeping option open. Plus, in four years, there may be an opportunity that would make it worth it. Even though they're really expensive right now, they might come down in price, and that one component is still cheaper than a new laptop. It's a potential future proofer. I'm just crossing my fingers.

I have heard many Asus G51 owners say that their current GPU can get to temperatures as high as 92C. Upgrading to a more powerful one in the future in that laptop is already a bad idea.

Now if you were talking about something like the NP8662 that usually stays around 70-75C or lower under full GPU load then that might be a different case.

You're much better off upgrading the CPU because the P7350 will become a bottleneck long before the GTX 260M will. Just wait a year since thats when you're warranty will end.

Upgrading the GPU can be worth it, especially from lower models. You however are already pretty high end.

It didn't surprise me one bit when I saw the 260m equiped G51 model that Best Buy sells. The 9800M GS like in my G51 series is probably the 65 nm version although there was a 55 nm version produced as well. The 260m is for sure 55 nm and there would be considerable power savings in the lower process while making up for the savings while needing it for the more shader units, more VRAM (not to mention faster), though the core and shader unit speed is barely faster than the 9800M GS. I'm going to assume the power envelope is similar. I'd love to be able to drop one into my G51 if I could but of course that wouldn't happen, but perhaps if enough of us called Asus and exclaimed our intentions, maybe? LOL not a chance in hell!

    Just found this on ebay:
Asus proprietary reverse Geforce 260M MXM card for sale on Ebay

Supposedly it's compatible with G51s and older G50VTs

Someone should buy and try to see if this could work in their G50! I'm almost tempted to!
