    Hey hey!
I'm wondering where I can buy MXM II cards.. I know there are lots of MXM posts on the forum, but it didn't help me much :p
I'm sitting with an AS 5920 laptop with 8600m GS GPU, was looking for a better GPU, but I couldn't find anything :/
Anyone know where I can find GPUs for laptops, and what GPU would you recommend for gaming?

    Thanks alot ;D

HD 4650 with DDR2 can be ordered easily and will work though you will need a little skill in modifying the heatsink (need some metal to improve contact to the core).

The best you can do atm is 9600M GT GDDR3 (though I'm not sure if you can purchase it easily), since the HD 4650 is DDR2. Check the Acer MXM thread for more info, several people have upgraded their GPUs.

9600m GT is not compatable with the 5920g AFAIK.

Alright guess you're stuck w/ the HD 4650 DDR2! Though it's still a pretty decent step up from the 8600M GS...

    Acer MXM Thread

Hit up TehSuigi there.. He's done a lot of work on MXM cards, and some other users who upgraded to the 4650. I think there was someone there who tried (and failed, sadly) to put in the 9600M GT there.

EDIT: There are also people trying to put in the 4670 DDR3 from MSI in a 5920, I think (DDR3, MXM-II version of the 4650) so you might want to check out since I think it would be the best (though a very rare part) upgrade for you. (I want to try too! lol)

No need to cross-post, I'll handle it here.
DarthBane, what GPU are you running currently?
I agree with most people that the Radeon HD 4650 DDR2 is the best upgrade at this time - we've had about 3 successes and no failures so far.
Your best Nvidia option - on the other hand - is the GeForce 9500M GS DDR2, which is only slightly better than the 8600M GT.

The Radeon 4670 GDDR3 is tricky b/c it's got a non-Acer VBIOS, which throws a monkey wrench into the scheme.
And yes, the 9600M GT is whitelisted on the 5920G thanks to a BIOS lock; it simply can't be used. (not 100% sure if the 9600M G S is, though, and that's just a lower-clocked GT).

The reason the 4760 is so rare is because the card itself is not sold individually. You have to salvage it from the MSI EX625 or the GX628, both of which I believe are discontinued models. Once I move up to my dorms this Saturday, I'll have access to the EX625 I found and I'll post the results of whether it's compatible or not. If not, then the 4670 probably won't be an upgrade option for you. Teh suigi has a link to the 4650 in the MXM card thread in the Acer subforum.

    1) 9600m GT is NOT compatible, don't think about that one
    2) HD 4650 is a sweet upgrade, but it's hard to find one, i'm searching too!
And 4670? i'm not sure. I'd stick to the 4650.

    Btw, isn't there a ddr3 version of the 4650?

You are one lucky chap. Haha

That's what's in the MSI, though, right? Or is it the 4670? Getting confused lol

I'd try salvaging one of those notebooks myself--if I could find it in notebook salvage stores here though--seems Philippines has a shortage of MSI and ASUS gaming notebooks, being known here as either low-budget notebooks OR high-cost, low-perf notebooks. Weird.

Here's for the 4650..passed down from thread to thread lol

There isn't a GDDR3 HD 4650 MXM-II card at this time (there may be a MXM-A one, though).
    The MSI EX625 has a GDDR3 HD 4670.

Okey, let us know if the 4670 is compatible with 5920g then pls, or I'll stick to the 4650 too..
    Thanks so far :=)

EDIT: Anyone know if the 9650m GT is compatible with 5920g?
