Alrighty, so...the 6970M I have at the moment is doing its job VERY well. The three generation old GPU is quite powerful today even, the added memory bandwidth helps a LOT with the FXAA-intensive games and the card itself isn't too shabby at stock clocks. I can see how this card was once a flagship model. However, most modern games, and even some older ones, are really just taking a toll on the GTX 465-equivalent GPU. I'd like to play most of my games on highest settings, or at least much higher settings, without much lag.

I've considered a few side-grade GPUs like the 765M, 670MX (Preferred option really. Very OC friendly.) and even just a 580M...however I want the GPU upgrade to be a really noticeable improvement over what I have right now, no overclocking at all, least not for a while...until at which I want a little more.

So what's the best I can readily strive for in my M17x R3?

    Upwards of $350ish budget...

Is that a natively supported upgrade? I had a LOT of issues with the old R2 I had and the 6970M. I'm NOT doing that again if it's required...

It's not natively supported, as in you could never order it from Dell with that configuration.
If that's your concern you're only limiting yourself to that older generation of cards. Hence, any upgrade won't be a big performance increase. That would be a crying shame.
Perhaps go though the m17 thread and have a look at all the users that have successfully moved into a newer gen GPU in the r3.
I'm with JDre, moving to a 680m would be a cinch and a world of difference performance wise.
