Here's what I want to do:

My current laptop is a Dell Inspiron 9400 Core 2 Duo T7400 with a 256MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 and Im finding some games dont run very well.

My old laptop is an Alienware Area-51m that has a NVidia GeForce Go 6800. The reason for the new laptop was mainly due to noise and a nagging wife!

I would like to know if I can replace the x1400 with the 6800?

    Thanks

if it was same laptop model and same graphics series etc x1000 GE force 7series than, Probably but two different manufacturers than have havok answered your question.
BTW the noise comes mainly from that GPU so it will not help you alot. Consider instead selling these, and buy one with 2600Hd or hd Xt or go 8600mGT

If you can find one, you could upgrade to an 7900GS.

Yes, but remember it has to be a Dell card. They have their own format.

@OP: You have one of the rare notebooks that has a removable graphics card. Check to see if there is anything else you have to do to get the Go7900GS to work - upgrade power supply, etc.

I'm pretty sure most Dell notebooks have their proprietary removable GPU format that's not MXM standard :p.

Also, how would you upgrade the power supply in a notebook ?

Dell's previous generation notebooks (E1705, E1505), used the same proprietary connector on quite a few of their notebooks. That meant that the E1505 and E1705 could share graphics cards, up to the point where power and heat would allow. It also meant that newer graphics cards, like the Go 7900 GS, which were released later, would be compatible with older E1705 notebooks.

Power may be an issue. If those E1705's fitted with a Go 7900 GS had a higher power rated AC adapter than those with the Mobility X1400, the notebook may have power problems when operating at full tilt. A new adapter will fix that, however.

You did not read my post right. I said:
"One of the rare notebooks" - not "one of the rare Dell notebooks".

Buy the power supply I meant the power adapter. I know Dell has different ones for different configurations. I am unsure of whether or not the standard 90W adapter will work if the Go7900GS is installed.

If the 1520 was updated to include another GPU as a configurable option, yes.

I wouldn't count on it though. It's likelier that dell introduces a new model.

    Thanks for all your comments.

I have found a couple of guides, the trouble seems to be getting hold of the cards. I even spoke to Dell upgrades team and they cant get one. Although they did say I could purchase another X1400 to replace mine?? Why would I swap it with the same one?? Oh well.

Here are the guide links if anybody is interested:

    1. Upgrade to 512MB 7900 GTX
    2. Upgrade to 7800 GTX
