Well, as ive been going through threads, ive seen more and more topics about updating your video card in a laptop. And i was wondering, is the X1400 XMX??

I think that is what i have to know...

And if so, where and what can i upgrade it to.

Links are well liked here!! :D

It is very likely you will have no other options. If Dell's new 1520 uses the same modular graphics card it might work...but on one knows for sure and I kind of doubt it would work as Dell changed the laptop's basic design. Dell uses their own design on GPUs, so you aren't going to be able to purchase one elsewhere.

MXM. Not XMX, and I'm not sure about the X1400, like the above poster said, it might be possible, but no one can be sure unless you open up your notebook and check.

    Dell doesn't use MXM.

The x1400 in a m5550 is on MXM and can be upgraded to x1900 though..

arggggg..... so what do you think about the ASUS external desktop Graphics cards, is the hardware worth 600 bucks, then on top of that, 200 for a graphics card?

It's an interesting solution, but not a portable one.

i knew it wouldnt be portable. I leave my laptop on my desk most of the time, unless im going back and forth from college, which i would just leave that external there. But 600 dollars, then another 200-350 dollars on a graphics card seems a little pricey... (i want the 8800 GTX, or the ATi 2900 Xtx)

Does anyone have this, and can tell me their experience

X1400 is on MXM Type II. I believe X1600 is a Type III so it is not compatible. I don't now about X1900 though. Would be very nice if it is Type II :D

If you can find out what size the 8600GT is in the new Dell laptops you might be able to upgrade. Of course whether it draws the same amount of power and whether the BIOS will recognize it will be factors.

It's not gonna have enough bandwith for one of those cards. Even a 7900GS is too fast.

The x1600, if in MXM, would be type II. However, most X1600 aren't MXM and neither is Dells laptops.
