Does the 7900GS stock have two heatsinks? The 7900GS should fit fine, but I can't comment on the heatsink though.

It will only take a 7900gs with ONE heatsink. You can't fit in two heatsinks because there is a tiny piece of plastic blocking the way.

However, quite a few people decided to cut out that piece of plastic so they could fit in cards with two heatsinks, like the 7950gtx. It's quite risky tho and I'm pretty sure it would void your warranty.

The mere fact of changing your GPU will void your warranty.

Is there any way for them to tell if he just put the x1400 back in if something got messed up?

They probably won't be able to tell, but the more you swap things around the more likely you are to break something.

My recommendation: if you're going to swap parts around, get an on-site warranty so that techs come to you rather than you sending the laptop to them. The guys that come to the house won't know your exact notebook specifications.

dell has a guide on their site that goes into detail on how u'll be able to do the swapping part. about the warranty void - he probably doesn't have any left, assuming that model is more than a year old, unless he got a 1yr+ type of warranty.
