specs? if u have vista i think it defaults to have scheduled defragmenting. i noticed that my computer was running really slow so i checked and it was defragging, scanning with my antivirus and windows defender. so i was like double jo tee eff. so i just turned off the scheduling thing.

check your processes and see if anything's taking up crazy amounts of cpu or memory.

since its a new laptop it probably had alot of bloatware
try to get rid of as much of it as you can...you never know whats running in the background with that stuff

Yeah my retarted fingerprint software will sometimes go crazy and take up all my ram. Even CRTL, ALT, and DELETE takes up to 5 minutes.

Of couse it is fixable. Your PC is functioning normally it seems, there is no need to worry. You must have installed something, changed some minor settings on your PC, or perhaps on your Router, a port may not be open, and Steam may be slowing down.

I think the most likely reason is because you are playing on high ping servers.

Its not the ping it was 17ms, I did download Americas Army, AOL IM, and bf2 1.41 patch, i did mess with the nvidia control panel, and i do have steam running.

Go to Start->Run->Msconfig (Is this still in Vista? :S)

then go to the rightmost tab and start unselecting everything that doesn't look vital. Maybe get rid of that fingerprint scanner if it doesn't behave. Also disable AIM from starting on startup.

oh noes! i can only play at a very playable framerate not my uber haxx fps! wholey sheet!11!!!11!1!

Right click on your desktop. Go to GPU settings or something of nVidia. Go to power optimization somethingorether. Then set the thing on both battery and plug to "maximum performance". It's something like that. I'll check when I get home.

And I would hardly call 40 FPS a framerate problem. Damn son, I used to play on 15 FPS. Even that was enough for me.

Hehehe I hear you. I thought eyes 40 was like the most you needed. I remember back in my day I used to play Doom over a serial link, lucky to get 5 FPS sometimes. Ah those were the days.

i had a similar problem with CnC3. What i did was reset my clock settings by using a program like ati tool tray and then lowered the clocks until i got artifacts and then reraised them. Weirdly enough that solved my problem and someone else who had the same problem (in CnC3 mind you)

Why not? The worst thing you can do is seizure in the middle of changing the bar, shove it all the way up to the top on accdent, and have the 0.000000001% chance that your computer fries.

Try that, but set it to balance then apply and reset it to 2nd time to max and apply... i had the same problem but this fixed it, my guess is some program i installed (in my case, Cisco VPN) mess the registry up...
Well, if u notice ur framerate is slower than normal, i would consider it as a problem.. big problems usually comes from small ones.
