This is probably not a place to discuss about a particular notebook but I need very specific help. And fast.
I bought a G1S-A1 a month back. However I had not run 3DMark 06 till yesterday since I didn't have network at home. So I ran it yesterday and to my horror it threw back 1947 points, whereas others with the same machine have reported 3000+ points without any OCing.
The drivers are stock and the hard disk is a 5400 rpm one. The OS is Windows Vista Home Premium. The only tweaking I've done is removed the bloatware from the windows startup.
Do you guys think there is a problem with the hardware itself? Has anyone had this issue with 3DMark before?
Please help. I have only about 15 more days in the US after which I return to India. Can't do much about it then. Any help will be appreciated.

Try to update your driver and check if your model has a 8600gt
I know that g1s-a1 has 8600gt but the score is too low even with stock drivers
Have you run 3d mark with resolution > 1280 x 800?
Post your 3d mark will be easier to find problem -
I checked the graphics card. It is in fact an 8600m GT with 256 MB GDDR3 RAM.
I might need to verify the display settings but I'm pretty sure it was more than 1280x800. I think was running it at a full 1680x1050. -
So the result is normal and your g1s is safe
you can't play at that resolution with demanding games like crysis for example on a laptop...try to take it at 1280x800
-
In that case, your 3D Mark score might be quite normal. The standard that most people here use is to run it at 1280x1024 so try it again, and see what you get. You should be fine.
EDIT: metaldeath beat me to it
-
Yeah |crash| fiiiiiirst
-
Thanks guys. Really appreciate the quick responses. I'll run the tests again later on and let you know if it's as disastrous as before
Although I hope it's not.
-
I just bought a Toshiba Qosmio G40-11D. Whenever I try using the webcam camera, a message will come saying the camera is not connected. From device manager, it shows that it is installed.
What do I do to get it connected or working? -
No problem. Good luck!
-
Hi guys,
Sorry I forgot to add I am using the basic edition so it won't let me use any resolution higher than 1280x1024 anyway. I thought the tests were running at system configuration. Didn't realize that the software could change the resolution independent of the system.
So basically the score was for 1280x1024 resolution
I am now going to try and change the drivers to 167.45 from laptopvideo2go
Hope there is some positive change fingers crossed -
Have you run 3D mark with the updated drivers yet? Remember to close all background tasks and programs while running the benchmark.
-
I ran 3DMark again with 167.45 drivers from laptopvideo2go
However I couldn't run Driver Cleaner Pro before installing new drivers.
Software wouldn't download. The file just refused to download past 99%.
A slightly smaller disaster this time. This time the system scored 2051 points.
What say? Should I give up and call tech support? -
Are you connected to AC?
Have you set the battery mode to max performance?
Do you have any sw in background?
Have you tried different older driver?
How much is the refresh rate of the display?
Download gpuz and take a screenshot of your 8600gt! -
@metaldeth:
here's the GPUZ screenshot:
As for the rest of the questions:
1. AC adapter was connected throughout.
2. I had set the battery performance to max in power4gear.
3. Most of the visible processes were killed before running the test.
4. I haven't tried any older version of the driver.
5. Refresh rate is 75 Hz.
I ran the tests with this setup again this evening. Gives me 2626 points.
Inputs welcome. -
We're improving
Try the 163.75 they are supposed to be good drivers, set res to 1280x800
and redo 3dmark -
Is Vista's power setting to "High Performance"? I'm assuming that power4gear overrides the Vista power settings, but I'd double check just in case.
-
@metaldeath: yeah. this improvement was much better than the previous one. i will surely try out the driver you mentioned.
@crash: hmm...good point. will check that too.
Thanks a ton guys. +1 rep to both. -
ctrl+alt+delete and see what the CPU usage is. if it's high then you may have unnecessary programs running in the back.
-
Hmm.. do you have some games that you could play to see if it's your card (which via GPU-Z seems fine) that's causing the low 3DMark scores? A quick check would be to download FEAR Combat because it's a (relatively) graphically demanding and free(!) game. With your card you should be able to run it at near max settings with around 30 fps. Use Fraps to check your fps.
Other than that, maybe try uninstall/reinstall 3DMark. -
@crash: unfortunately i have no games here with me
@everyone
Today i replaced the drivers with 169.04. I also removed the battery and ran the laptop completely off the adapter. The tests returned 2742 points this time.
An improvement but still nothing great. I think there is something fishy here. I had read someone else's thread where he couldn't get past 2800 no matter what he did.
You think I might be having the same issue? -
... one more doubt. Could it be due to the BIOS? I went thru the G1s Resource thread which lead me to a thread on Asus's website. Out there someone has said that due to a bug in the older BIOS the 3DMark scores were badly hit.
Can anyone clarify which BIOS version is being shipped now a days? -
Why not download the latest BIOS from the manufacturer and see what happens? If the BIOS versions in your PC are identical it won't make any difference so give it a go.
-
It should tell you your BIOS version when your computer boots. If not, then you can enter the BIOS and it'll tell you.
-
@harleyquin & crash: My BIOS version is 202 I guess
Here's a screenshot of my sys info
-
*bump* need some inputs people
-
If you're looking for the latest BIOS, it appears to be 300. Not sure if that will help your problem or not.
