V-sync (Vertical Synchronization) matches your monitors refresh rate/frequency, with a 3D applications frame rate. In other words, it won't allow your frame rate to rise above your monitor's refresh rate.
Also, it fixes any "tearing" you might see in games. For example, when playing Crysis I notice a green fuzzy bar on the top of my screen, but when I enable V-Sync, it disappears.
Granted, I'm not an expert on V-sync, but I hope my explanation helped. -
V sync puts a cap to your fps. Meaning it fps won't go beyond that cap.
It also helps deal with tearing. I usually turn on my v-sync in nvidia's control panel and not in game.
In dead space, if you turn on vysnc ingame, fps caps at 30. If I do it from nvidias control panel, fps caps at 60.
If I turn it off completely, I experience a lot of tearing in areas with shaking and lighting effects. -
BTW, turning it off will increase FPS, if thats what you are intersted in.
Through the NV Control panel. -

But it at least makes it seem like it, and usualy play better. -

Ill see how it helps! Thanks. -

So is it good or bad then?
-
I can't play any games without vsync on, the tearing and stuttering ruins the experience for me

I read your post then went into nVidia and put vsync on in there and turned it off in Dead Space and what a difference! I'm not sure about some people but when I had vsync on in Dead Space it was hard to effectively move the mouse in the menu, but when I turned it off in Dead Space the mouse moved smoothly. I wish I found this out before since I believe I have almost beat the game.
Now I just have to tweak Fallout 3. Unfortunately it crashed last night when I was talking to Three Dog. Don't want to go off-topic but anyone have help?
Now about this buffering. Would I benefit from doing that trick?
Thanks.
