I am interested in using a flat panel LCD TV that I have as a monitor and am curious as to whether a standard VGA OUT port on my laptop is all that I'll need to use for the display. It doesn't appear as though I've got the HDMI output on the machine so I believe that's my only option.

VGA is the best option if you don't have HDMI. For VGA you will need a VGA cable and 3.5mm to whatever PC audio input your TV has.

I would anticipate probably in the area of $35 - $45 for a 6ft cord but that's just a guess as I haven't searched for one yet. Being where I am right now, I'm going to try and see if the local PX happens to have one on hand first............then I'll look online if I have to.

No, that's waay too expensive. To the OP: You're looking at a $7-$20 purchase. Check Amazon.com and look for the Cables2Go brand; they sell reliable products at less than market price. The price given by the other poster would be like Monster branded Cables as opposed to regular VGA cables.
