    hi all

i have an Sony vgn-ar51j that has a nvidia geforce 8400gt intergrated card running windows 7 with 4g ram and there is a major graphics display issue that i cannot seem to solve!

basically as soon as i boot i get red lines of equal spacing running down the screen with the 7 logo animating fine over these. then when it goes to the desk top the resolution is incredibly low and i am unable to reset. at first i put it down to faulty graphics card or driver but when i put into safe mode and came back out all was well i could even play movies on the T.V. but once i shutdown and rebooted the problem comes back!

i have tried a reinstall and this has made no difference has anyone seen this before and is it fixable?

any advice would be great. as i am completely stuck!!!!

    many thanks

could you take a picture of the screen and post it on here so it gives us a better idea of what the problem is.

Safe mode doesn't load the graphics driver so your card isn't actually isn't really being utilized. Trust me there's a big Nvidia defect from that time and it appears your card finally met the end, sorry for that

As for fixable, a new motherboard is the only real fix. There's also reflowing the card, plenty of different methods to achieve it as well

    hi

i would normally agree with the synopsis however i dont think i have been overly great with my discription. if i go into safe mode and then restart (without powering down) all is fine in fact as good as it gets resolution wise. but when i do a full power down and start up it all comes back lines and all and failed resolution settings also windows cannot see the card calling it generic.

if it was a tower i would just throw the card away and get a new one. now this is im sure a stupid question but am i assuming that these boards do not have a slot for any adapters

hmm, thats a new one on me.
it could well be a dying graphics card but not dead yet.
this is what a dead one looks like.
im not sure how sony make their computers but you mentioned a intergrated 8400GT but dont you mean dedicated so if it does totally die it can be replaced.

well you could be correct i cleaned down the fans so whilst the case was open i took a look basically the cpu and graphics share the same heat pipe and the graphics just looked like it had been place onto the board i assumed it has been soldered to it
