a noob question...does screen tearing occur in high end cards? or most of them? because last time i used a mainstream card 9800m gs, and don't experience any tearing, only flickering. and enabling vsync doens't eliminate the flickering in some games i play. so in high end cards does screen tearing occur in you guys? what are the main factors that screen tearing will happen? im just curious. thanks!

Screen tearing occurs when the game is trying to display a frame rate higher than your monitor can display. It displays part of the frame, but while it's still in the process of outputting that, another is rendered so you see part of one frame and part of another in the same refresh cycle. This would happen MORE with high end cards if you don't use vsync, since they're capable of displaying higher frame rates to begin with.

Eh, I leave it off by default on my desktop and have not encountered screen tearing at all using a 60 Hertz LCD. The way I think about it is leave it off until you have screen tearing, which I haven't had any any games yet. This might be due to the fact that most games with all the settings on max run at around 60 FPS. However even on WoW where I would regularly hit 100-150 FPS I wouldn't have any screen tearing.
