Playing Metro on max settings and my FPS is dropping down into the 20's in more open areas (am on Outpost) this seems ridiculous as I play much more demanding games on 60+ Is this a game issue or?
Thanks

Thermal throttling? CPU usage? CPU clockspeed?
My guess is CPU bottlenecking honestly. Most mobile CPUs can't really keep the 1070/1080 fed.Vasudev likes this. -

I turned of SSA and my fps rose to 70. But that seems ridiculous as the game is very old now? Shouldn't I be seeing like 100+ FPS easily?

For example Overwatch on laptops listed there with the 1070GTX and 6700HQ their FPS is 100+ while mine with the same settings is 70
Or GTA on there is listed as having 60+ FPS on ultra while mine has 25-30. I've also tried overclocking my 6820HK but barely any change. My temps are between 75-80c. -

Hi Cariblo,
I believe we faced a very similar problem to what you are describing. We will help you achieve 2 objectives in this post, and for that we require you to be patient, and to carefully follow the below instructions till the end. This FPS drop problem will not solve itself, unfortunately.
We will help you achieve 2 objectives:
A) Accurately diagnose your problem and narrow down its root cause(s). (Probability of Success 80%)
B) Fix your problem. (Probability of Success 40%)
First, please update your original post with the full laptop name and model name plus its specifications (CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows Edition, Geforce Driver version, BIOS version, Intel Management Engine driver version, and ME firmware version in BIOS).
Please follow the below instructions carefully and report back on your findings for each one.
1. Shutdown your laptop by holding the SHIFT key and clicking shutdown in Start Menu. After it shuts down, unplug it from the AC power and disconnect the power adapter from the laptop. If your battery is removable, please remove your battery as well. Leave it for one or two hours, then reinsert the battery, reconnect the power adapter to the AC mains and to the laptop and turn on your system. Run Metro Redux and let us know if you witnessed any change.
If still not solved,
2. Go to Windows Update screen and check the Update History. Make sure no Nvidia drivers were installed by windows at all. If yes, please report the date and driver version installed by windows update.
3. Go to Power Options in control panel and make sure your power plan set to High Performance before you start any Game. Next, Go to Nvidia Control Panel, 3D settings, Program Settings Tab, Add the .exe file of your game and adjust its power settings to high performance as well. You can also set it in the Global settings tab. Also, in global settings, set vsync and gsync to off. Restart your laptop after changing these settings. Try your game now, and report back the results.
If still not solved,
4. Download DDU from this link and nvidia driver 385.69 for notebooks by searching for it here. Those are the most stable nvidia drivers if you are not playing new games released after September 2017. Once ready, disconnect your laptop from the internet, and restart it in Safe Mode. Run DDU in safe mode as an administrator, choose CLEAN and Restart (usually the first option). Make sure the Nvidia GPU is selected to the right in case you have another Intel GPU onboard. After the laptop uninstalls the nvidia drivers and restarts in normal mode, run the downloaded driver v385.69. Select Custom install, then deselect 3D Stereo drivers, and Geforce Experience. Only install the display drivers, HD Audio Drivers, and Physx drivers from that package. Once done, restart your laptop, and try Metro Redux again and report back.
If still not solved,
5. (Credit goes to Danishblunt) Download this bat file and run it as admin on your desktop. It uninstalls and disables GameDVR in windows 10. GameDVR in windows 10 has reportedly caused performance drops in games. Restart your laptop and try your game again.
If still not solved, please do not lose hope, this is a very important step:
6. Turn off your laptop to let it cool down before we start the next test. We need fresh Idle temps for this. Always hold SHIFT key while clicking on shut down. Download and install HWinfo64 to help us monitor your CPU and GPU temps and clock speeds while gaming. Open the sensors only, and enable the sensor logging at the bottom (looks like an excel sheet icon) just before you launch your game. Again make sure you are using the high performance power plan in power options. Play for 15 mins straight then alt+tab to HWinfo64 window and immediately take a screen shot of the CPU Cores frequency and CPU Cores temperatures (You should have 4 cores, #0 #1 #2 #3), and the CPU Core thermal throttling readings (Yes or No) and another screenshot of the GPU temperatures, clock, load and voltage. 2 screenshots should be enough to cover all the above readings. Upload the screenshots here please.
If we conclude that you do not have any overheating problems, let us try this fix that partially solved my problem:
7. (Credit goes to Danishblunt) Install MSI Afterburner or Nvidia Inspector, and overclock the GPU clockspeed by 100MHz, save and apply and run the game now. Did the fps stabilize or still fluctuating? Did the fps reach higher and more steady levels than before? You can try again with +150Mhz, and +175Mhz, and also by underclocking -50Mhz. You have to calibrate for the sweet spot that gives you the highest AND most stable framerates.
8. Let us try resetting the BIOS for you:
(Credit goes to Phoenix) Turn off your laptop. Press and hold the power button for 35 seconds, you will see it power cycle on and off, do not release the power button until 35 seconds have elapsed. After it turns on again, enter BIOS when it boots up and reconfigure your settings like AHCI or RAID, etc... if any
If all of the above fails,
9. Perform windows recovery using the built in recovery image provided by the manufacturer (or if you have it on a usb). Reset the laptop to factory settings. Try not to download the Windows 10 image from Microsoft using the Media creation tool as this won't help us isolate the problem. Then reinstall the device drivers from your manufacturer's product page, dont use any updated drivers from elsewhere. Bring it back to its original factory settings. Make sure you are disconnected from the internet during the windows installation process and later on while configuring and installing the device drivers. Highly recommend to follow NBR Windows 10 Clean Installation Guide by Phoenix. After being done installing the device drivers and redistributables package, the next software you should install are benchmark utilities such as 3DMark, Cinebench R15, Furmark....If you can try to download them on another computer and transfer them to your laptop via a USB stick to avoid connecting to the internet at this stage. Compare your scores with scores found in reviews of your laptop model. Notebookcheck.net can be of help. If your benchmark scores after clean windows installation are lower than the average (GPU and/or CPU), and your game still doesnt run at high and stable framerates, then it is a mysterious hardware problem that requires replacement of the laptop.
If you have the willingness to go through these steps, we will all have a much better understanding of your problem. At lease one of the above steps should fix your problem, if you are lucky. Worst case scenario: this will enable you to better communicate your problem to the warranty service providers in case it is a hardware issue.Last edited: Nov 21, 2017 -
You must not understand how tremendously demanding Super-Sample Anti-Aliasing is. You're essentially running the game at a much higher resolution. 2x SSAA renders double the pixels, 4x is 4x the pixels, and so on it goes.
It's a brute force method that requires immense resources.don_svetlio and Vasudev like this. -
