I recently reformatted my Dell desktop computer (sorry, not sure if Desktop computer questions are kosher around here), and I installed the most recent available drivers for my GeForce4 Ti 4200 graphics card (not impressive, but should perform for basic tasks).

Although the driver is obviously installed (I can edit settings and I can change to decent resolutions), the video card doesn't seem to really be taking effect. Videos played on Windows Media Player seem to have dulled down colors with little detail, and certain windows (such as the AIM 6 Buddy List) does not move smoothly when dragged (very choppy, as if it had a terribly low FPS).

I'm on the highest color quality setting (32 bit), but I'm not sure what else to check, as the defaults seem to be alright. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Notes: Machine is a Dell Pentium4 running with Windows XP

    You should try www.desktopreview.com.

The latest drivers isnt always the best. Try different ones. Also use driversweeper to completely clean out drivers.
