I'm trying to record some Far Cry 2 gameplay with Fraps but as soon as I hit that record button everything bogs down to 30 FPS. This is just as I am talking to a weapons dealer.
So I assume if there's action the frames would drop even lower.
Is there anything like Fraps (well, just the recording part of Fraps) out there that won't drop my FPS (it looks damn ugly in video format)? Price isn't an issue.

Downloading now.
Since I'm on the topic, can anyone recommend a decent editing program?
I used Movie Maker to make this but I'm sure there's something 100x better out there. -
Not sure, but could the "bogging down to 30fps" be due to the recording program esentially v-syncing the game to the framerate of the video being recorded (namely, 30fps, as is fairly standard)? 30fps is really hardly bogging down. I mean, if you were running at a higher framrate and recording to a 30fps video stream, the video would be all torn and ugly.

I set Fraps to record at 60 FPS so that's unlikely.

Drop the resolution down.

I have always used VirtualDub for video editing. I heard of a solution to the problem you described but I am not 100% how to do it so maybe some one else will give you the full details.
From what I could remember, you would send the output of the video being played on your laptop to another computer / screen and use the separate computer to do all of the recording. I am assuming that you have another computer that you can use to do this.
As suggested earlier, Gamecam should work without dropping your frames as much though. -
Have you tried AutoScreenRecorder 3.1? It works really good for me.

It doesn't record well at all, and I'm talking about the Pro version.
Thus far Fraps is easiest to use, so I guess I'll look for workarounds. -
Its unlikely you will be able to record anything passed 1280x720 at 60fps. With fraps you should be recording at 30fps and drop the resolution from what you normally play to get best results. Even if your system is pretty decent your HDD will be maxing out if recording at 60fps especially if using the same drive to output the files as what the game is running on.

you can try and use set affinity in task manager as a lot of games only use one core on your processor so you can tell it to run on the other which will improve the speed. I saw a guy on youtube had done this and i tried it and it worked.
