    X700 is about 4x faster.

BTW, these type of questions belong in the Gaming HW and SW section, so it's being moved.

There are a ton of threads on this, so if you do a thread search, you can find a lot of nice info.

    Hey, it's alright. ;)

Are you looking for a new notebook to play games with? Your current notebook is pretty powerful, but in the graphics dept. it is not so good, just wondering . . .

Ya I was looking at the Sony VAIO SZ's but now im looking at HP dv4000...whats your suggestion on that?

The SZ is way more expensive even though it has the duo processor... I cant decide its really getting to me now

I need it for univ/ gaming and my current notebook is to big/ heavy for daily carrying around with its lame battery life :)

The HP dv4000 and it's stablemate, the Compaq V4000t [actually is slightly less money], are the best gaming-capable notebooks you can get for your money. The 128MB X700 is very fast, and can handle any game out there at decent settings. I'd definitely recommend 1GB of RAM (upgrade it aftermarket, it's cheaper) or more for gaming purposes.

With the 12-cell battery, you can get over 5 hours of battery life, although the battery sticks out the back, not sure you like that. You can always buy two six-cells.

    What kind of games?

Well about that i was going to order (512x1) then take out the ram from my current HP and put in that. I also have an IBM whose ram I can take out.

Would the ram from my hp or the IBM work with the dv4000z.
I would go with compaq but HP's has a nicer look :)

btw thanks for the quick replies. I want to run general games, like WoW or Battlefield 2, would they work? I dont have either of these but if it can run those then im all set.

Well, the RAM that you have in your current laptop will not work in the V4000t.

    The V4000t uses DDR2-533 200-pin SO-DIMM's, incompatible with DDR.

I would order 256MB x 1, and then pick up a 1GB SO-DIMM off of Newegg, that is very cost-efficent.

Yeah, those games would work perfectly. I play BF2 on my X700 at maximum everything.

I would get it off newegg but do they ship to canada?

Me and aero are running in the same circles :) I too have given up on the SZ since the standard only has the 128mb card and the shipment dates are getting farther away. I have been looking at the HP DV4000 also but I would need it to play WoW for sure also.

The dv4000 is the exact same notebook as the V4000t, just a different case. ;)

Do you mean the DV5000z? That is an AMD notebook with the X200M, not a very good gaming notebook . . .but it takes DDR333 PC2700 memory, so if you have some sticks of that lying around, it would work.

If you are going for a gaming notebook, the dv4000 is a great choice. Can you get it in Canada with the 128MB X700 option? Last time I checked it wasn't avaliable.

You may want to look into the Asus Z71V as well. Higher priced, but still a good deal for the quality you get.

Don't think newegg ships to Canada. :(

    Try FutureShop ;)

FutureShop yeah I could try that or BestBuy :)

good to know kreidel...you got MSN or something we can discuss it over...we both just cant make up our minds.

yeah but the dv4000 has a nice case :). Nope i didnt mean the dv5000z.
Chazman can you please tell me if my current HP or IBM thinkpad ram would work in the HP DV4000?

    thanks!

I just need that RAM question answered

What kind of RAM does your IBM have?

The HP dv4000 uses the same type of RAM as the V4000T, which is DDR2-533 (PC4200), 200-pin SO-DIMMs.

How well will this HP DV4000 stack up against the Sony FE with it's GO 7400 256MB gpu? Any others that we should consider?

BTW, I would suggest upgrading the hard drive if you havn't done so already. 5400 rpm is standard for me... but it'll only affect load time and installation speed. Still, for an extra $50, I think it's worth it

My IBM has PC2100 DDR SDRAM 200-pin non-parity SoDIMM. And the current HP, I have no idea. If they are both 200-pins would they work or does the PC4200 and PC2100 have different structure?

    Thanks!
