I'm getting ready to order a Sager 5793. I don't (as of right now) plan to game with this laptop. I was thinking of ordering the Sager 5793 with the Nvidia 8700GT card. But to make this laptop more future proof would I better off buying it with the Quadro FX 1600M , or the 8800GTX card.

    Thanks.

8800MGTX will make it more future proof. There is a new laptop called 5796 coming out soon which is the latest platform.Wait for that.

If you REALLY want "future proofing" then wait for the 5796. If you don't want to wait, get the 8800m. It's one of the most powerful laptop cards on the market right now. It should last you 2 or 3 years before becoming completely unusable.

Interesting. But one of the vendors that participate on this site regularly (don't ask which one) told me not to bother with any other card unless I plan to do a lot of gaming. He said the 8700 will be fine.

Thats pretty true, if you are a average gamer, you don't need a 8800m gtx, but if you like playing games at high resolutions and maxed settings then a 8800m gtx is the way to go.

I do believe the FX1600 is just the quadro version of the 8700mGT.

If you aren't gaming on your laptop... Then why buy such a powerhorse? :p

Good question. My main reasons for looking at the Sager are the following criteria. I wanted a 17" notebook, that I could fully customize, buy with XP Pro and that contains absolutely no bloatware. Anything else like this out there??? Also is anyone else going to give me the support and warranty of a reseller like Xotic or Powernotebooks???

I dont race either but I drive an 5-speed 02 WRX. I like to have power, wether in car or in a laptop because you'll never know when you might need it.

Dude, if you aren't gaming or using high end 3D apps, your are blowing your money away on a high end GPU. I would suggest you get thehigh end GPU, then go out and buy some games and learn what gaming is supposed to be like. :) But seriously, go for the lowest end card you can get. It will be way more than enough.

I do play games on my Xbox 360 and my PS2. But I don't plan to use the laptop to game. Also I just heard from a good source that Nvidia has discontinue the 8700 is not going to be available too much longer. :(

i have both the 8700 and 8800. if you are only doing a little gaming then the 8700 is just fine. the 8800 is MUCH BETTER performance then the 8700 but it also drains the battery faster and makes a lot more heat.. i own that sager and also own both cards.. trust me unless you want the extra performance for gaming dont bother with the 8800 save your money

The 8700 is no longer under customize for the Sager 5793 at Xotic or Powernotebooks. :(
The only cards available right now are the Quadro 1600 or pay more for the 8800. Back to the drawing board.

Quadro will work fine. What do you have against that one, if you were willing to go for the 8700 or even the 8800?

I have nothing against the Quadro and it should work well. But the 8700 was the GPU available on the 5793 for no additional charge. Now it's the Quadro that's available at no additional cost but I'm pretty sure they raised the price tonight to compensate for the higher cost of the Quadro 1600. I built the 5793 earlier today with the 8700 and the 8800 and I'm pretty sure the starting price was lower. I have the printout on my desk at work. I'll check it out in the morning.

What about the HP 8710P? I think it should fulfill your needs?

Actually I have looked at the HP 8710 & 8710W. Those are good choices also. But the Sager with the 8700 cost less, not too mention the great support and warranty from the resellers. I will post the starting price of 5793 from 6-9 am as soon as I get to work. I'm pretty sure it was raised last night.

There are plenty of 17" laptops with fast processors, windows XP, and no bloatware that don't have highend (expensive) GPU's inside. If you like spending money go for it, the 8700M would be 'ok' for a gamer, but I think you'd be fine with an 8400 :p .

I think you should just get a good GPU, and get into them if you have the time.

edit: If its cheaper, then you have nothing to lose. 8700M all the way.

Such as, please list them. Remember 17", XP Pro, fully customizable and absolutely no bloatware. This include no AV.

Also I looked at 8710 in the past but I ruled it out I wanted a card min as fast as the 8700GT. And it's my money I work my ass off everyday. So I have no problems in spending more money for a better GPU just in case I might use it later on. I don't plan to game with it right now but who knows maybe in 6 months to 1 year I will.

Ok just got to work the starting price did increase by $195. I guess this was done to compensate for the higher cost Quadro 1600. On the plus side the same build with the 8800 is now $10 less.

Easy, Dell XPS 1730, Vostro 1700, Vostro 1710. HP's 17"ers (HP Compaq ). (No Bloatware? Simply Run on a fresh copy, then run on a fresh boot with msconfig for insurance  )

I understand what your saying though. So go ahead and enjoy that 5793 :)
