Quick question that hopefully someone can help me out with.
I'm spending six months in Chennai, India and I'm about to run out of games to play. I'm staying in a hotel with a terrible connection so downloading from Steam is not an option. I found a store that sells the Orange box and I want to pick it up, however, I'm curious if I would encounter an problems with being able to play the game. Can anyone think of a problem that I might encounter?
I know that DVDs have regional codes and I was curious if this applied to video games as well.
BTW, I'm originally from California.
Thanks for any responses!
Chris

i believe you should be fine. there are international versions of the game, but i've played the international versions of games before on my notebook, and it has worked the same as any other game. i don't know if regional codes will not allow you to play since i assume your computer has a registered OS from the US. i don't know how that works if you mix and mingle those things, but i do believe you should be fine.

I have no idea how PC game region coding works, it is possible you will have to set the region code on your DVD drive to whatever India uses before you can use the DVD. Also, if you are buying the orange box, you will be registering the game on Steam either way, though you wont have to download the game files. I just worry that when you are no longer in India, the game might still register your account as originating from India nad thus applying region locks or some other such scaryness.
Otherwise, Orange box is a GREAT buy. So good. -

..it didnt ask ask for any regional codes or anythin..

I thought regional codes are only present on consoles?
It's a tool for price discrimination, damn those monopolies. -
To the best of my knowledge (having worked both in the games industry and with DVD video equipment), region coding (in terms of DVD regions) only applies to VIDEO DVDs. The compatability issues you may encounter with foreign versions of games will not arrise from region coding per se, but from incompatabilities with character sets, if anything. However, most localized games include the localized content as well as a default English version, so (and I say this without 100% certainty) you should be fine.

Hey, while you're in Chennai, stop by Chrysler and say 'Hi'. Such a small world. I have weekly conference calls over there, as a matter of fact connecting there tomorrow.
