    Video memory type?

    Is there any particular reason why many recent NVIDIA laptop GPUs use DDR2 or DDR3 memory? I thought GDDR3 was not only the standard (for NVIDIA, at least), but also much faster than either DDR2 and DDR3 for graphics cards.

    They are considerably cheaper than GDDR3, thats why.

    ...A surprising reason, especially since many of these are $1000+ notebooks with half-decent GPUs too.

    Laptop makers want to trick the average consumers into thinking a 1024M DDR2 must be 2x better than 512M GDDR3, in fact most people won't even question the difference between the different memory types, to make the things worse, many notebook manufacturers don't even state the memory types using for their GPUs. And using using cheaper DDR2 helps lowering their overall cost.
