Has anyone successfully played games online, using a virtual LAN over long distance?

I used Hamachi for C&C: Generals: Zero Hour, to play LAN games with people over the internet from far away, but that's it. No other game has yet to work using this method.

I'm guessing it might be the games trying to use the real LAN instead of the virtual LAN.

Are there any good alternatives to Hamachi?
