Under performance in the control panel for vista you can change the page paging file size for virtual ram, now at the moment mine is on system allocated which is 4362mb, however the recommended amount is 6093mb and the total available is 200096mb. Now if I set the page filling size much higher what exactly will it impact?

    Thanks :)

Someone on the forum once fiddled around with the page file size, the conclusion drawn was unless you really know what you're doing or if there's a program/game that specifically requires custom page file settings you're doing more harm than good by messing about with the page file settings rather than letting the operating system do it for you.

the page file should be set:
    - minimum = your amount of physical memory
    - max = twice the physical.

Its been that way for years.... seems to be the optimal setting.

Even better is if you have multiple HDDs in the system, then you can gain some performance by making the pagefile be on the secondary drive instead.

I disabled my page file and currently don't have one. everything is in the RAM, this way NB is a little bit more responsive. There is a possibility to run out of memory and then you will have a crash. This occured only once to me as I wasn't paying attention and had load of tabs open in browser.

My point is - nothing will happen.

some game refuse to run unless you have say over 2gb of free virtual memory.
just don't tweak it unless you know what you're doing.

I have 4gb DDR3 so some said removing the page file would force eveything into the RAM
however i also have SSD and in Warhammer Online before i got my SSD character modules sometimes took over 10sec to render on screen after a load, after SSD there was never a hesitation and character modules appeared instantly. Then i removed the pagefile and character modules sometimes take a few sec to render. I think this is do to no page file because it happened around the same time i removed it. Tonight if i remember i'm going to turn it back on and see what happens...
So far i only use 50% of my memory max with the 4gb so i have had no issues with crashing but it does seem things may have slowed a hair and benchmarks show my ssd speeds are consistant with when i bought it so i think it may be lack of pagefile

more virtual memory affects system performance but less also affects system perofrmance

So in the end, there is still no conclusion about the "optimal" amount? I quote optimal since it might be different for different people/uses. I set mine to a small fixed rate for programs that require it, else I force RAM usage since it is 100x faster.

Ummm, pagefile is to make up for lack of RAM. Sooo, if you have 16GB RAM someday, and you're still running XP, there's absolutely no need.

haha yeah but some software will use/require pagefile no matter how much free RAM you have but really it wouldn't be much of a benefit to really dream about IMO especially with SSD

Well model renders were instant again but i didn't get a chance to test it until this morning so i'll have to try and get around to it tonight when there are lots of players online at the same time.
