Ok.. so vista is getting some hype.. with direct x10 and vista coming up.. I am really at something of a loss. I am wondering if its worth it to hold off on getting a laptop.. I am thinking its kinda pointless since someone is always going to release something relativly soon..

Anyway.. vista is going to require 40 gigs if i'm not mistaken.. so is there any real advantage in vista (besides gaming?) I mean direct x10 will be coming out and it will probable need or work best with vista.. but, by the time direct x10 becomes mainstream and such.. odds are it will be time for me to get a new laptop anyway.

So.. should I wait and get vista? I personally don't think it will be good enough to justify the 40 gigs it takes up...

1st of all there would be no point of getting vista as it comes out:

    1. It will be buggy (wait untill first SP comes out)
    2. New dx10 gfx cards will be expensive
    3. Vista wont be good for gaming unless you have something like 8800gt
    4. Who cares about all that fancy GUI :D

Im sure your current rig will run vista without any problems as ive tried it on my Celeron 1.4Ghz,678Ram,x200m and the only down side is that its abit lagy when using Aero.

But for now: just grab yourself a Core 2 Duo with dedicated GPU and you'll be fine.

What are the specifications of the computer you are currently using?

You need a hard drive with a 40GB capacity, but the install is 15GB for Vista Premium.

I would just wait, and get a laptop now. Its not like you won't be able to install Vista at a later date on it.

40GB recommended, and the Vista install takes ABOUT 15GB...my RC2 build needed 18GB. There are some useful GUI features (not Aero...I mean search capabilities, redone Start Bar) that I actually like, and I'll upgrade for sure once a SP is out.

    1) SP1 and I'm in.
    2) DX10 will not be coming to notebooks as quickly as you think (except for integrated)...they have HUGE power requirements and will take a little time to come down. For the meantime, expect lower powered DX9 cards that are as good or better than today's offerings.
    3) It is true you lose some performance to gaming...just wait for drivers to be optimized (and fixed) and it should be okay.
    4) GUI is good sometimes...

    15 gigs??? WTF???

**** good thing I'm not bothering with Vista, it wouldn't even install on two of my machines due to hard drive space lol.

15 gigs and it doesn't even incluce an office suite? What does MS put on there?

Aero, BitLocker Encryption, Locked Kernel, MCE (and all the business stuff as well), new audio stack, new networking stack, IPv6, 64-bit DLLs (which are larger BTW), nicer backgrounds, more "games" included (I LOVE the 3D Chess).

And I've only been toying with RC2 for a few days...those are the features I've already come to appreciate. I had to uninstall it though, cause I can't always babysit my computer (I need it to boot into XP most of the time) when the thing wakes itself up to do backups and the like.

For many laptops (at least 60GB+), the space really isn't an issue anymore, MS realized that and decided to use some of that space for some goodies.

I still can't fathom why that all would use 15 gigs. Aero shouldn't be using more than 50, a MCE like system, 100.

Guess it just surprises me that Vista could be classified as bloatware.
