Getting a new laptop, with a brand new Vista disk. Whats the verdict? How compatible is 64 bit? How necessary is that extra .5 gigs that the 64 bit system would bring?

I run 64bit and have yet to find a program, with the exception of TAT and O&O Defrag, that I cannot run. Mind you I'm sure there are more, but I have had great luck with it. Just my personal experience.

I use vista x64. I have not had a single program that is not compatibile. I even got a game from windows 95 to run, it's called Sega Touring, though the graphics were a bit outdated :p

Well, a number of VPN programs I know of don't work with 64 bit. If you're using this for company or school work, check if your school/company requires you to use such a program and if it's supported in 64 bit.

+1 for Vista x64. I run it on my desktop and laptop. I'm using 32-bit on my HTPC only because that machine has only 2GB of RAM, so it's not worth the jump.

Vista x64 has run beeeee-autifully. Couldn't be happier.

Try "that extra 4.5 gigs". Depending on BIOS and chipset some laptops such as the XPS M1530 will support 8GB of glorious ram.

I've generically found any system SHIPPED with a 64-bit OS will work more or less exactly the same as an x86 - that is to say you won't even notice the difference.

Most peoples gripes with 64-bit so far, to my understanding, has been because they have a CPU that supports 64-bit (i.e any CPU you can buy today, more or less) - but have a system that was built around 32bit - and as such, most of the drivers have to be found and/or scrabbled together from various places - and most of them are makeshift and not really supported; more of a "this should make it work for now" solution.

I just bought the machine in my sig - I hated vista and more so hated the 64-bit versions when I tried to use them on my desktop (AMD64 3200/7800GT/2GB RAM), because the drivers for just about everything were trash - but since buying this laptop, I've not had a single problem - drivers or program compatability. I don't even dislike vista anymore - my main reason for disliking it was how many of my frames it stole while gaming - but with my machine now it dosn't make a **** bit of difference seeing as everything bar crysis runs at totally maxxed settings at fluid rates :)

Bottom line - if you're buying a new machine and it offers to come shipped with 64bit - don't be afraid of it; 64-bit works just fine when run on environments it's intended for :)
