In Vista, if you set a game to run in Compatibility Mode (let's say using the Windows XP SP2 compatibility setting), will that game still play in DX10?

I never wondered about that. If you set the compatibility mode, you're make use of XP features, but does that also limit the DX version to 9.0c?

I think that you drop the DX10 when runninh in comp. mode, but I base that on absolutely nothing :D

What titles are you trying to run in compatability mode that do support DX 10? Modern titles with DX10 support shouldnt need it period.

I am setting Crysis to Compatibility Mode - XP SP2.

The reason I'm doing this is, if I run Crysis straight up, when the main menu comes up, something weird happens where I cannot move my mouse to certain parts of the screen. Like there is an invisible boundary or something. It's really weird. The only way to continue is to Alt+Tab out of the game, which causes to run in windowed mode, and then pressing Alt+Enter, which causes the game to go back to fullscreen. After that, everything runs just fine.

However, this extra step with the Alt+Tab then Alt+Enter is annoying, and setting the game to Compatibility Mode fixes it completely. I'm just not sure that if by doing so, it still runs with DX10 effects or not.

Well, try it and see for yourself.
Or you actually need to "know" that the effects are there to notice them ? :D

trias i had the same problem as u b4, try changing your Crysis resouition to 1024x768 and fullscreen first. do that and later change to any resolution u want, that will fix the problem

Umar: I tried what you recommended but it did not work :(

Eleron: Yes, I'm not sure what DX10 adds to Crysis so I would not know if I am using DX10 or DX9. Do you know how to tell the difference in Crysis?

Apparently DX10 Crysis has very shiny water and superior shader effects (trees and other objects look prettier). The tradeoff is the massive performance hit for any system without an 8800 GTX equivalent video card.

Harlequin already answered, so I`ll just strenghten the fact that DX10 is still a bad choice for gaming.
Very High is settable through the console and custom configs, but I`m sure you don`t have quite that a powerful system... :p
If you insist though, google custom configs for Crysis and so on.

What I do recommend is the NATURAL MOD for Crysis, makes it look much better.

I looked into it, and it looks like installing the Natural Mod invalidates your current singleplayer saved games. I'm already half way into the game, and would hate to restart :(

Do you know of any way to bypass this saved game invalidation?

    Hmm, not really .
But honestly,if you`re half way through the game, you can save them somewhere else, and restart with the Nat. Mod... it will be worth the play again.
