I heard that SP1 was supposed to have increased performance for games. I'm often a little skeptical of this sort of thing, so I thought I'd see what other people thought.
I have the comp as explained in the sig. It was able to run a lot of things reasonably well a year ago. Oblivion pretty well. Stalker pretty well. But it chugged a bit in Crysis.
After a hiatus from PC gaming (courtesy of the new PS3) and hearing about supposed boosts from SP1, I had been considering a return to try out some PC games, and maybe giving Crysis another go.
SO HERE'S THE QUESTION: Did SP1 REALLY give a measurable improvement for most people? If so, how much? Any thoughts on the improvement in my system? Thanks in advance.

Nothing noticeable.

Unfortunate... But also what I expected. More empty promises designed to get people's hopes up and believe a product might be better than it actually is.

It has supposedly helped alot with multi card setups (SLI, Crossfirex) and also with some memory issues. There is no real reason to not upgrade to SP1 that I can think of.
-
SP1, like any other service pack, is for system stability and maintainance - not gaming. -
Apart from the faster file copying.
-
^^that was fixed in one of the earlier updates.
-
It sure gave me a performance upgrade. Rather than having to install 100 updates every time I reformat, I just have to install one big one.

really big one lol as i just installed it 2x in the last week, takes longer to install SP1 than it does Vista.
-
I like my Vista home premium, but they make too many updates too often, occasional bigger ones are better for me.
havent really felt a difference in performance though -
The unpatched version (1.0) of Assasins creed got a boost when used with a DX10.1 Card and AA turned on.

I just installed it when I did the clean install so I'm not sure. System works well with WIC and Crysis so far, still can't get it to run PCMarkVantage though, pisses me off because I actually PAID for that program.
-
I saw better stability nothing more and nothing less. Games and applications still run the same.
-
No harm installing the service pack, I've noticed little to no difference in gaming performance and my PC has fewer crashes than before.
-
Oh I installed it alright. I wasn't going to not do it. I was just curious if games that chugged a bit before (Crysis) might have gotten a little closer to playable with this. As expected, it generally sounds like a 'no.' I just was thinking about whether to go out and spend some money on those games.
Guess not for now. OH Well... Thanks for all the help everyone. -
Crysis doesn't chug because of your OS. Crysis chugs because you don't have the appropriate settings for your 8600 GS.

Good point, I just turn off UAC anyway...

i haven't notice any increased gaming performance after the sp1 .. but i noticed the os is kinda more faster now and stable .. but same as regards to games as it always was ..
