One site that I rely on for system spec checking ( http://srtest.com) only recognizes 248 mb (not even 256) of gfx memory on my 8600m gt. I went to display properties and clicked on advanced and it did show 1023 mb total gfx memory on the pc with 767 mb being shared. Any way to get that site to recognize the entire memory pool and rate my comp more accurately?

Well, if I understand the question correctly, what the manufacturers list, and what is real are different things. The real number is 1024. But manufacturers do it by 1000. So what happens is a small discrepancy. That's why it's off by that little amount. And the site is correct, you only have 248 mb of onboard memory (remember, that amounts are different) and the rest is shared RAM which comes from you computer. So.. does that help?

ok but usually the site registers any shared ram thats on the comp, ive seen screenshots from other comps from the site that show 1023 or so total gfx memory, but with mine, the shared mem isnt recognized

For your viewing pleasure, I'll include a picture to illustrate my problem:

This comes from someone else's laptop that ran the same kind of test. If you notice in the gfx card area, it gives the correct amt of memory 512 dedicated plus 767 shared for a total of 1.2 gb. For my laptop, it only shows the 248 on that site w/o the shared memory. -
Awesome laptops Notebook Evangelist
sorry to put this bluntly but why the bother to get a site to regcognize the memory
-
It's DDR2, 256MB of 1.2GB won't change anything

mine is the 256 mb version of the 8600m gt with gddr3 fyi

Shared memory is ONLY allocated to your video card when it's needed, IN the rare case that it's needed. It's not part of your video card, and will not be recognized as actual memory for your video card by a website. Your computer will most likely not benefit at all from even using the shared memory, it's actually just a ploy by computer manufacturs to confuse the average consumer into thinking that they're getting something better because they combine the shared memory with the video card's dedicated memory.
You video card only has 248MB of actual USABLE memory on the video card. The other site which states 1.2GB should be considered as misleading.
Vista adds shared mem to gfx card but...
