I havent used vista on a regular basis since beta 1 and 2, and then I never tested it for gaming performance. I was wondering if it has affected video card and gaming performance at all. The reason is Im looking at a new HP 12in integrated tablet (Nvidia I think), and the review said it scored ~450 3d2005 marks. Now Im wondering if this is the hog of an OS vista is thats causing this as I remeber my single core 1GB of ram ati 200m integrated scored around 700 a long time ago. Maybe its a really bad card, but Im still thinking its vista.

If it is I may purchase the laptop and ditch the ME look alike that is vista and call it a day. I need a smaller laptop then my 15.4, also the tablet feature is nice for work. The most my gaming will be is UT2003, UT2004, RTS games, and WoW. Any input is welcome thanks!

running on my G1, the difference is probably 3-5fps.

3d2005 doesn't seem to be affected greatly. about 3%.

I use vista for gaming and have had no problems.

however, with an intergrated card, it might be different.

same here. i have no issues with performance when it comes to gaming on vista. its more compatibility for me. i get errors and crashes every time i play dark messiah. which is a shame cause that game kicks butt. i think it might be the source engine. which really bums me.

Generally speaking, yes, Vista is slower in games, by some 10-20%, and that's unlikely to change. (at least in DirectX9. DX10 is supposed to bring performance improvements, but we haven't really seen enough of it yet)

If you have an integrated graphics card and need to squeeze out every last FPS, XP is better for you. In my personal experience though, the decrease in performance is so small that it isn't noticable. As far as 3dmark05 goes, I'm only about 20 points behind in vista, but maybe the performance gap is exacerbated when the card is not a very powerful one.

OK well I guess I wont be purchasing this laptop. Right now I have an Acer 5672 with an ati x1600. I know my games and WoW will play on an ati 200m integrated, but the nvidia integrated in this HP seems way to weak for even that.

I just uninstalled vista ultimate on my system in my sig and i saw a huge performance leap in my x200, I can now play all the games I couldn't with 25+fps, Where as in vista I was getting 10-18 fps. But thats just because of my x200.

I upgraded from XP to Vista on my HP nw9440 (which has a quadro FX1500 gpu --- basically an nvidia 7900GS, and I've had no issues at all with using the quadro for games).

FWIW, the 3dmark06 score dropped from about 4110 to about 3880 after upgrading to Vista, so there is a performance hit, but I don't think it's that large. Personally, I like Vista.

p.s. I have 2GB of RAM --- perhaps the graphics performance drop with Vista would be worse on a machine with only 1GB or RAM, I don't know.
