I just ordered a Vostro 1500 w/ the 8600m GT card (1.6ghx C2d, 1 gig, 160 gig HDD) but saw in the local ads a XPS 1710 with the 7900gtx (2.23ghz, 2 gig, 100gig HDD) and am really regretting the Vostro purchase.
Im really waiting for Crysis, do you think the 7900gtx will perform better on it?
I hear support for the 7900gtx is long gone, should this worry me?
What reason do I have to keep the Vostro?
Thanks!

The new Dell XPS M1730 is due out soon with the choice of a single or dual 8700GTX's and in the future with a 8800GTX, I would wait for that.
Since the 7900GTX will only be able to play Crysis in dx9 mode, not to mention its a bit dated. At least look for the 7950GTX. -

Why would you be regretting your Vostro purchase? I just received mine (Vostro 1500), only problem I have is terrible backlight bleed. I'm calling tomorrow morning to request an exchange.

There's a huge difference between 15,4" and 17". The 8600M GT is the best card you can get in a 15,4". If you want something larger, the 7900GTX crushes the 8600 GT and performs, overall, better than the 8700M GT on higher resolutions.

I dont mind the 17", and the only reason im even considering cancelling for this is because he only wants $600 for the XPS!
But, im thinking that a new laptop would be a better investment in the end anyway.
Thanks for the replies! -
take the xps! for 600 thats a much better deal

If it works...
But anyway, yeah, the 7950GTX in the current XPS 1710s is a much better choice than the 8600/8700 cards. Those support DX 10, but probably won't actually be powerful enough to use it, and need to fall back to DX 9 mode anyway. The 7900GS is more in line with the 8600GT or 8700GT, and even then it outperforms it most of the time (slightly) in most of the benchmarks I've seen. -
Well, it turns out he was miswording things a bit, the computer only works on video out...
Ghey.
Vostro it is.
Vostro 1500 8600m GT or M1710 7900gtx?
