I just got my new machine today.
ordered with a 8600m GT, DELL said it was a ddr2 8600m gt very clearly in my order confirmation.
and now my vista display settings says otherwise! it shows up as a 8600m gs!!!

3dmarks and gpu-z shows up 'gs' as well.

I resized the screeny so it's kinda bad. the score is 3452 benched at 1280*800.
    so is that a 8600m gs gddr3 or a 8600m gt ddr2 in disguise?

That isn't vista your looking at it, its 3dmark. 3Dmark is not always accurate in telling you what your hardware is, for example I have a sager 2090 and it also says it is a GS instead of a GT. If you look under vistas hardware device manager you will see that it is most certainly an 8600gt.

The Vostro 1710 isn't even available with the 8600M-GS, this is very odd. Yes call Dell and see what is up.

Actually, I think that the 8600m GT for Vostro 1710 is only available for US and UK. In all other countries you're stuck with 8600m GS...

    just called dell.
their manager said he's 100% sure that the right hardware is installed, only the 8600m gt is configurable. They say it's a driver issue, only 8600m gs drivers are available from dell so yeah.
anyways I'll look for some drivers and they said they will get back to me for the driver support

How the hell can the manager be 100% sure, they sure as hell didn't build the laptop themselves. You should have more luck with a replacement than your money back.
    Good luck...

There are no drivers for specific cards, unless they're inf limited.....the point being, the reason it's showing up as an 8600GS isn't because it's an '8600gs driver'.

Strange problem though - but is 3.5k really an average score for the 8600gs at 3dmark? that's almost the same as the score I got with my ddr2 8600gt at stock, and same as many others....

Your score actually looks normal for a DDR2 8600M GT.

Don't forget that your processor will affect your score as well and 3dmark06 scores range.

    thanks, it did feel weird.

the score looks a bit odd, a stock 8600m gs should not get that high. but I still have to do some real gaming to find out. EVERY software tells me it's a gs. 3dmarks makes it look like a gt

Look at the quotes I posted, the Vostro 1500 guy also claimed that his GT was shown as a GS.

I would say you definitely got a GT and suing Dell, as you were recommended to do, would be an awfully stupid idea (being facetious here).

Interesting. When I ordered my 1710, the configuration page only mentioned an 8600M GS however my confirmation e-mail told me i ordered a 8600M GT. Oh well i guess i'll find out in a few hours.

Tianxia, your score does look pretty high for a GS though... I guess it could actually be a 8600m gt with gddr2.

Does Dell even offer the 8600gs in any model? I haven't been to their site in months but I didn't think that was an option in any laptop they made and therefore it would be very unlikely that they had some lying around and someone misread and installed the wrong card into your computer. Like others have said its probably driver related, when I got my computer it said I had a 8800gt and some programs still report clocks and temperatures wrong.

Edit: After looking around the US site I see 1 place that mentions it being the 8600M GS but in every place that the computer is configurable at it says 8600M GT (128-bit). Once again until someone says different I don't think Dell sells the 8600gs although HP, Asus, and some others do and I seriously doubt thats what you have.
Edit 2: Looking back it is weird that it says 256mb because I thought the DDR2 8600gt from Dell were 512mb.

Hey at those resolutions (1280x800) my 8400m GT oc'd to 8600m GS values scores 3.5K 3Dmarks :p An 8600m GT should score alot more imo

Lol thanks for bringing back old memories dtwn83. Old scores lol. 3DMark still detects my 8600GT as a GS on their website, but everything else (GPU-Z and device manager) both say it's a GT.

If you look for 8600m gs benchmarks, you'll see that (at stock values) performs a lot less than the 3DMark values you obtained.

I found a review of a Inspiron 1720 that has 8600m GT (DDR2). The processor is similar to yours (1.8Ghz, 2MB L2 cache), and the 3DMark benchmark is very similar to the result you got.

Perhaps you should check the number of "stream processors", but I don't know if it's possible. The specifications for the GS and GT can be found at nVidia's website.

    The 2 Inspirons are at 1280 x 1024, the Vostro is at 1200 x 800.

I'm saying this because... the Inspirons are 1680 x 1050 screens and the Vostro is 1200 x 800.

Seriously, you have a GT. :D

    I have a T7250 2.0Ghz, 2gb ram. I ran 3Dmark06 the tests at 1280x768, driver 174.74 and oc'd to 600\1200\800 a slight bump up on memory over the 8600m GS but otherwise identicle specs;
    3582 3D marks

Really.. demand a refund! Did you buy this in britain?

He's running it on 1280 x 800. Stop freaking the OP out.

    1280 x 768 = 983040 pixels

    1280 x 800 = 1024000 pixels

    That's a 4+% increase in pixels.

Statistically speaking, you'd be getting about a hundred points less in 1280 x 800 purely from resolution alone. That might not seem to be a lot, but you're getting a number of points from your better CPU and overclock as well.

Why don't you run 3Dmark06 at stock settings and see what results you get?

Even though the clocks reported by Rivatuners looks like the 8600m GS, just to make sure. Can you please post a screenshot of the GPU-Z main screen, I am interseted in seeing how many shaders GPU-Z actually detects.
