    Sorry voted for Link, not only does he star in one of the longest running, most enjoyable game series going, he's more selfless as a character, is probably more recognisable to non-gamers, and he's been around so long its possible his games were played by, enjoyed by and influenced the creators of half life.
    Im not voting for freeman just because he started on PC.

    Then theres a fact that OOT is pretty much the best rated game of all time, and imagine HL, 2 and the eps have a slightly lower overall rating than the LOZ series. Will be close though as they have both starred in some awesome games... that and freeman fans seem to cheat to vote more :p

    Mario vs. Link is a little overdone. Freeman vs Mario would be an interesting match up to see though. As much as I'm rooting for Freeman, in the end Mario is gonna win as someone mentioned.

    I voted for the one Free Man. I mean come on, he uses a crowbar! I like swords and all, but the crowbar is just awesome.

    However when it comes down to who really is the best video game character of all time, it's Mario. This is because anyone can identify Mario by his sounds, look, his clothes without him in it, etc. Most of us played at the very least one Mario game as kids. We know who he is without even the slightest second guess.

    Actually you'll probably find just as many older gamers going for Link, you gotta remember LOZ has been award winning since back in the 80's, well over a decade before Gordon Freeman ever shrugged his geeky soldiers at a security officer banging on a door, on the monorail into Black Mesa.
    Link to the Past on SNES, and OOT are both absolute classics, and both released before Half Life 1.

    Gordon and Link both have gaming legacies; and both have been borrowed from by thier respective genres.

    Its really a close race. Neither have been able to hold the definitive lead very long.
