Best graphics, that's debatable, my favourite nicest looking game is Crysis. Sure it can't be played to it's full potential yet but it still looks the best... even if it is a slideshow.

In terms of future games coming out, the trailers for both Mirror's Edge and Deadspace absolutely blow me away. They look so realistic.

Bioshock, COD4 and Colin McRae: DiRT. These games have great graphics as far as I'm concerned. I played them on Xbox 360. Haven't played Crysis jet but that's about to change soon.
As far as "coming soon" games are concerned I can't wait for Far Cry 2, Mafia 2 and BioShock 2.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned Age of Conan, it has to at least be in the top three of best graphics.

technically, crysis and assasin creed are still the best along with bioshock maybe but artistically, shadow of the colossus and okami on the ps2 are still the best.. ;) ..

The 4850 is a "mid range card" and it plays crysis 1920x1080 very high no problems. thats what I have.

I actually have dual 4850's but crysis only uses one card....

Age of conan? really? That is one of the worst "graphically" games I have ever played in the last 2 years. It may be top notch for an MMORPG, but even the origional HL2 looks ALOT better.

I can't really say this yet.

There are just soo many great looking games. You've got GRID, which is an amazing looking racing game, then Crysis, which does play 1920x1080 with all very high settings (on XP x64) with very playable framerates averaging 30-35fps. And wouldn't my 8800GT 512mb OC'd card be considered "midrange" nowadays what with new cards like the GTX280, HD 4870 being the new high end.

Anyone who still thinks that Crysis isn't the best looking thing out there should pick up some custom maps, particulary some of the Desert style maps people have made on Crymod.com, some of them are simply AMAZING, and make you think your watching a CG movie.

We still have alot to look forward to, as someone else said, Mirror's edge, now that looks amazing. Mabe ressurrect this topic in mid 2009? :D

My vote goes to Mass Effect and Age of Conan. AoC will look even better when it becomes DX10 compatible.

Midrange? please. the 8600GTS is midrange, the 4850 is considered a high end, since it owns many so called "High end" graphics card of this time.

    4850 IS mid-range, 4870 is high-end.

Mirrors Edge will be out this November, so we'll see how this game stacks up aginst Crysis and such in terms of graphics.

pfft i'm im not talking about the freaking series numbers, i'm talking about raw performance.

and about Mirror's Edge, it loses badly VS Crysis, its gonna totally pale VS Crysis in terms of Graphics.

for me crysis too is the best graphics, but for performance/graphics ratio, unreal tournament 3 wins for sure, its really well optimized, for many of us, play crysis full on in a laptop is almost imposible, i just seen crysis full-graphics on pictures, instead unreal tournament plays very well with better graphics. I'm gonna pull out a curve ball and mention the God of War series for the PS2/PsP, the environments on those games are totally immersive and have a life all their own. Its amazing what the right team can acomplish with old decrepit hardware

Photorealistic environment doesn't necessarily mean great graphics. I consider the overall style of a game far more important than how highly defined textures are. Frankly, games like Monkey Island III are more visually appealing to me than Crysis because of their unique style.

well spoken. crysis has very high detailed textures and high poly count objects... and advanced lighting techniques and other post processing effects...

but really, the graphical experience is not the best... there are other things that make up "graphics" that crysis is not that great in...

    like

    animation.

call of duty 4 owns crysis in the animation dept.

still, crysis can produce some crazy high quality stills.

Am I the only one who loved/s the cel-shading style of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker?, Okami, etc.?

That, for me, is totally artistic, and immerse you into... just something else... you KNOW that you wont expect a gazillion-shaded mega spider dx10.1 thing, and that sort of calms you down, in terms of "you're not expecting anything zomggraphically z0mg-ish", you just settle for what you have, and be satisfied...

Cel shading is an amazing style..., not the "best" graphics, IF you bound yourself to the little box that good graphics > artitic style, but then again, for artistic styles you don't actually need cel shading, there are many games, like Phil and Iceman mentioned above...

    IMHO, Artistic style > Graphics.
I want a game that submerges me into the game, not just "looking at the game" with crappy gameplay.

btw, no game has ever matched up to Oregon Trail.
