Vulkan API - now born! First game on Vulkan API in Beta stage The Talos Principle.
What is it about? New API which brings game's control closer to the metal. In advance it should become fastest API. Also almost ANY OS support (The Talos Principle has no XP support and no 32-bit support. Most likely other developers will follow this trend). Also opensource!

Is it already fast? API is version 1.0 now. But the Game is in Beta stage so now it is 20-30% behind DX11 but already way faster than OpenGL. It will be better optimized later.

If you think Microsoft won't renew the free business model, you're missing the point that Microsoft is banking on - the fact there is a deadline gets more people to upgrade. The reality is that Microsoft has taken a page from Google and realized they make more money from selling your personal info than they do from selling a new OS for 200+ bucks to the consumer. My guess is they will renew the offer at the last minute - after all, the more computers on 10, the quicker they can save the money for supporting 8.1 and 7. Microsoft lied about DirectX 12... It can be back ported relatively easily, they would just have to back port WDDM 2.0. The fact is, DirectX 12 being a 10 exclusive gives their pickiest audience, the gamers, a reason to upgrade when they would normally continue to clutch to trusty Windows 7. My machine is night and day since I dropped back to 7 (my machine came with 8.1 Pro and so I had to buy a 7 Pro license but I don't like 8.1 or 10 anymore - 7 just works without being a bloated mess) and while I have a dual boot for 10, it won't be used until it's for DX12.

Vulkan has always had a Linux support... Actually before SteamOS, Khronos almost abandoned the project entirely because Vulkan is meant to bring DX12 service to other operating systems Microsoft refuses to support... SteamOS (which is a fork of Debian Linux) breathed new life into the project. This is the second time in history a company with the power to bring change has endorsed Linux to the consumer (Dell was first... And fizzled entirely). The best chance is the fact that SteamOS just works. Proprietary drivers and all out of the box. I've used it. Plugging in my PS4 and Xbox controllers without needing to install drivers? Impressive. The thing that does bug me is that Valve hasn't ported their own games...

I can see the path this is going. Indie game developers will likely start to develop for SteamOS and Vulkan exclusively. These individuals will start to comprise tomorrow's staff making AAA game titles, shifting the PC gaming from Windows to SteamOS/Linux. I can see this happening in less than ten years' time. Very nice. Other than needing Windows for legacy games, we can say bye bye to MS and even continue using Windows 7 for the foreseeable future even without MS support, if it's going to be solely for legacy gaming.

    Ten years?!

...what's needed is stable broad AAA game support by the time the next consoles show up on shelves or PC gamers that are picky about OS will experience a support gap.

But what if Valve finally releases HL3? For Vulkan? What better way to get away from MS... Hey everybody told me since 97 Final Fantasy VII wouldn't ever have a remake and I told them they were wrong and bam... They finally announced they're doing it.

Think about what Valve wants, their connection with gamer wants... Maybe it's my fever but it makes sense. Valve has been moving away from Microsoft for years... What better way than to release HL3 for SteamOS only? Considering they offer it for free, it wouldn't cost gamers anything. Just some time to install

Yep. That's what I'm thinking too (without the flu, but I am terminally insane, so there's that), and with SteamVR also making its way. Could be a game changer for the gaming space. Just need a handful of AAA titles to launch with SteamOS compatibility and let it grow from there.

Thanks for bumping up this topic but let's not make it in another Win10 Hate Club. That fishing crapware (looks like OS but is Spying System) already has too much talking around.

Has anyone forgotten the DOS 6.22 virus scare?

The bottom line is Microsoft has a lot of work to do... But unless they don't extend the free offer past July... Free always has an asterisk...

Nvidia released WHQL Driver v. 364.47 with support for Vulkan API. I hope laptops do not get bricked after them.

Also how Vulcan Showoff on Unreal Engine Demo was created

That's actually being done a mobile device... I'll leave it here but I'm going to copy it to a new thread in the Smartphones and Tablets section. I think it's funny they're all Samsung this, Samsung that... But then you see a Qualcomm dev... Tells me that again, the ATI Imageon silicon Qualcomm started with is ahead of Samsung and ARM's Mali... It makes one question why Samsung doesn't cut a deal to use Adreno (look at the name... If you can't see Radeon then get your eyes checked) tech in their chips, especially since it's Samsung who fabs their SD820s. Exciting year for mobile this year!

As for the Linux comment... I've never once heard of an nVidia binary corrupting or bricking any system... Because the Linux kernel is smart. What does unfortunately apply is that nVidia refuses to support SLI on mobile and the limited support they have on desktops in Linux isn't even worth mentioning. Using Linux will cut your performance immensely on SLI machines until nVidia decides it's worth investing in (meaning SteamOS, which is based on Debian) actually warrants it. As it is right now, I have to boot with more kernel flags than it took to get to the OS X Tiger installer on an AMD processor to even run anything past Ubuntu 15.04....... Nouveau is the open source answer to nVidia and their closed mentality... It breaks probably between 80 and 90 percent of nVidia laptops and if you have Intel graphics plus nVidia... Its a mess.

AAAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!! Nvidia has already deleted 364.47 WHQL Driver from the list and now offer 364.51 BETA instead!
Such pathetic clowns they are now. Feedback.
I feel happy I've just switched to AMD.

UPDATE: People are outrageous about their GPU starting artifacting after installing that driver while Nvidia is trying to cut the trace from them to fried GPUs (if there are any).
Glitchy NVIDIA graphics driver cooks graphics cards (update: not that bad)

Even 10c would add to to quite a bit... NVIDIA drivers are a total fail...
