WASD vs Arrow Keys
My main question is WASD vs arrow keys for movement. I'm right handed and have always used WASD and the mouse for weapon fire/alternate fire, weapon select and reload
Gaming mice
I'm in the middle of choosing one. Most have at least 5 clickable buttons - 2x thumb buttons plus wheel click. What do you have mapped to all 5 buttons? All sorts of possibilities. Jump, health, grenade, etc.
Left or right handed?
Other
I know some people use left mouse click for "move forward" and have ASD as strafe left/right and move backwards. Middle click and right click on mouse for alternate fire/fire (in that order). R button to reload with E and Q left as peek
I want to gauge what people use and to learn a new killer control set up because its about time I step up from "amateur"![]()

i've played TFC for over 2 years. i used WASD for movement, space for jumps, left shift for crouching, mouse 1 for fire, mouse2 for grenade, r for reload, v for discard, tab for stats, ctrl for walk, e for use and the best for last q for last weapon swap. this setup is pretty efficient and worked well for me.
others but rarely used are
f - gren 1
g - gren 2
z - for some crap i forgot
1-9 for different type of weapons
i wouldn't suggest using all of your mouse buttons because it seriously hinders your aiming precision. i'd say your biggest advantage over other players will come from using q for weapon swap and mouse2 (right mouse button) for your most used grenade. -
I used to use the arrow keys (from my Doom days
), used them until HL, then switched to WASD
-
Whenever i play Counterstrike. i use the WASD mapping as it is the default ^_^.and everythingdefault for a FPS. but it is a different story for my mouse.
-
Arrow keys. Right shift for jump, right ctrl crouch, Ins 0 for prone, middle mouse button for reload, Del for sprint etc...
can't stand wsad. Too hard reach some of the buttons comfortabely, especially when trying to move while crouching or something... -
WASD for movement
advent laser mouse - left button = fire/action
right button = alternative fire/throw item
middle = draw weapon/scroll through weapons (scrolly wheel) -
WASD ftw.
. -
WASD
left click shoot, right click either aim/draw weapon or if there isnt that option, grenade
left thumb button either crouch/prone or use item
scroll wheel- change weapon or click wheel for grenade -
Every game I play:
Arrow keys for movement. End for jump, shift for action, enter for enter, mouse for fire, selection, aiming, etc. -
usapatriot Notebook Nobel Laureate
WASD for movement.
Shift for crouch
Space Bar for Jump
Everything Else Default -
lol, i can play both proficiently.
On a desktop, i prefer arrows, and have proved its ability to beat out WASD.
This is what i call my Touch Type Gaming keys
Pinky finger uses
- hits right Ctrl for jump
- right Shift for crouching
Ring finger:
- DEL for switch firemode
- INSERT for other stuff depending on game
Middle finger:
- END for Reload
- HOME for other stuff depending on game
Index finger:
- Page Down for other stuff depending on game
- Page Up for other stuff depending on game
Thumb:
- 0 key on Numpad for Walk/Run
And i Use NUM PAD for keybinds for weapons, chat, etc
All of this perfected after Duke Nukem 3D,
.. then dominated in CS (based off Half-life) & TO (Tactical Ops based off Unreal Tournament)
On notebook, the Arrow Keys and INS, DEL, HOME, END etc.... are not as accessible with the notebook keyboards... so then i use WASD keys.
If you ever get a chance to game with me, i'll play with both are show you the difference. -
I don't want to dislocate fingers, so I won't be learning that set up
Its interesting all you (I presume) Americans/Canadians so far are pretty standard. On a UK forum I visit, there was a surprising amount of people who use mouse left click for move forward and use an unconventional set up. Come on all of you lot, I know you're out there!
Thanks people who have posted so far. Keep them coming. I'm now thinking map jump to middle mouse button, reload to a key near WASD and alternate fire to right click. -
u know what, i have a friend that does that (right-click to move forward) he even uses a laser Trackball too.
actually its very comfortable. in fact, the reason i started to do it this way (my Arrow keys) was the the thumb and the pinky was pretty much wasted in a WASD setup.
With the pinky, its much more versatile to to jump and crouch with than the thumb. -
I usually use the default WASD. In some games that need more hotkeys, I'll move it over one, to ESDF, or even RDFG, so that I have more keys available for my pinky to press.
-
I use either. It depends on the game. I use WASD on CSS. But when I play sports games, I use the arrow keys. Right now though, I'm trying to learn how to use a gamepad when I play sports.

I'm ingrained with FPS games to such an extent that I use WASD for everything, even racing games and the like. Shift is crouch/shift, space jump/handbrake, Q and E lean, F use, X flashlight, Ctrl prone, and Alt sprint/run/NOS. G changes grenades, and 1-0 are weapons, although usually I just use the wheel. Typically, Left mouse is fire, right mouse secondary/zoom, wheel is melee/zoom, large thumb (Back) is cast spell/use special ability/use item/use environment (if nothing else makes sense), and small thumb (Forward) is throw grenade or, if that's not applicable, kick/melee. Tab is show scores/inventory, F5 quick save and F9 quick load. F12 is take screenshot. If I need more buttons...well, I have a G15, so I have a vast supply of buttons on my keyboard within pinky range.
I also have a lot of slight variations in various games, because vastly altering the default control setups is a lot of effort, and I'm quite lazy. -
So I see a lot of people just go default and as with other habits, it is now second nature
BTW: buy yourself a controller for racing and sport games. Seriously! I thought it was a given I was talking solely about FPS controls
-
i've been always used arrow keys on my desktop, until the only thing i have is a laptop
previous: arrow key, shift for secondary attack, insert (0 numpad) for reload, no extra mouse button
now: wasd, f for use, r for reload, e for flash light, ctrl for crouch, 1 thumb button for c (crouch in COD2 and cas spell in Oblivion) -

Notebook Solutions Company Representative NBR Reviewer
WASD for movement. C for crouch, X for prone, Q for throw away weapon, F for fix jam, R for reload, E for opening, Spacebar for jump, shift for run.
Hope helped you! -
WASD for movement.
Right Click - Primary Fire
Left Click - Secondary Fire
Click wheel up - select Pistol
Click wheel down - select Knife
Pressing click wheel - select grenade
E - Reload/Action
F - Flashlight
Z - Paint Spray
Space - Jump
Crouch - Crtl -
Hm. Have to do some experimenting now methinks.
Will remap reload to left alt and have right click for secondary fire. Middle click could be any one of jump/select specific weapon/grenade. With a gaming mouse coming in, it could be a while mapping the 5 buttons; trying out all the combos posted here

DAWS all the way baby
-
WASD, typical CS setting... guess we're kinda stuck to it...
-
I'm wondering if anyone here uses Left Shift for jumping and Space Bar for crouching? (kinda backwards from what most people do)
I tend to crouch a lot in my gaming, so having my thumb rest on the Space Bar is a lot more comfortable to me if I have to idle for a while. Jumping is a less frequent maneuver, so relegating it to Shift made more sense to me. (I don't bunny hop or anything; gone are the days of UT/Quake, 'til UT '07 that is).
I used to play ol' DoD 1.3+ back in the day, so crouching to steady my aim was crucial for landing a shot. Standing while shooting normally resulted in 30 airborne rounds for some crazy reason. -
For a while I used the arrow keys. Then I started using the WASD keys and I haven't gone back.

I've never thought of doing it like that, but it does make sense. When i get home i'll give it a shot.
-
When gaming i dont use any keyboard keys whatsoever. I use the Nostromo n52 and have never looked back. Best gaming device ive ever used!
-
I use WASD for maneuvering. The only game I ever used the arrow keys was in Delta Force 2, and that was becasue they were the defaults.

Homer_Jay_Thompson blathering blatherskite

We have our first special gamer!
Here's a link to the manufacturer site for the mentioned product
I've always wondered about these kind of products. I understand the idea behind them... but then have never tried them or wanted to risk wasting money if they weren't for me -
Well, ur 3rd choice could have just been none of the above or 'who uses something else'
Its not special to be diff here but rather mor efficient
Once youve tried it you too will wonder how have youve ever gamed without such a device before.
If you play SupCommander you will know theres like 50++ special command keys to move your troops. Its mind boggling to even try to remember all those "'Ctrl and Alt' key combos.
Nostromo n52 makes it effortless. And with the option to record macros too its so speedy to do the most complex tasks.
Dont bother with those specific game square keypads and keyboards. They suck and break down all the time.
Find a store like BB that allows a full refund and try it out. -
I use WASD, but own both the N50 and N52, but never really used them too extensively, as the software for them was bad. I use a Logitech mouse that was bundled with my keyboard, but hope to get either a Logitech G5 or G7 soon.
WASD or Arrow Keys? Your gaming mouse button mapping?
