I just stumbled upon this argument online. How some people use WASD and others use ESDF. Ever since I've started gaming on PC, I've used WASD as that's usually the norm with games. But now that I think about it, ESDF makes more sense as you can press more keys. What do you guys use? WASD or ESDF?

Arrow keys ftw

WASD for chat movement, arrow keys for driving.
ESDF kinda makes sense from "more usable keys" perspective, but unless the game is ArmA, you don't really need a lot of buttons these days. -
WASD without any hesitation
-
WASD, after years of mmo my hands sit there almost naturally. Also, I don't think I could reach modifiers as easily with ESDF
-
Haha are you left handed?
I usually use controllers for driving games. I just can't drive with the keyboard. I feel like games like Metro or Crysis have quite a few. I'll give ESDF a go on the next few days and see.
I used to play on console so even WASD is not that natural to me. Although I've been getting comfortable with it lately.Last edited by a moderator: Mar 14, 2015 -

I was talking about driving in games such as GTA/Saits Row/etc. For actual driving games I too prefer a controller.
Using PL:" or OKL: makes more sense for lefties (multipliers, access to spacebar).
I do think he was joking. If not, oh dear... I have a friend who used arrow keys, it made me watching him play very, very uncomfortable... Luckily he moved to WASD now

Oh right. I tend to play third person games with controllers too but that's probably because I played on console for years. I really only use the keyboard for FPS and strategy.
Lol especially considering how tiny some manufacturers make the up and down arrows. They're not very usable. But I guess that a sub 17-inch notebook issue.Last edited by a moderator: Mar 14, 2015 -
WASD, mainly because every game defaults to WASD. With ESDF you have to reconfigured everything, just a pain in the butt.

QA OP and space bar, old skool hard core because I can
-
This. And ESDF puts my thumb too far to the right on cramped laptop keyboards.
-
I reconfigure everything anyway, but I need WASD because of how often I use shift and ctrl, and it doesn't feel right on ESDF.
That being said I remember it had a guy who used "right mouse" for "forward" and "ads" as "d" and AS and F were his movement keys. I ain't reach that level yet. -
WASD if i have to, 360 controller otherwise.
-
WAXD + left Shift with pink. WASD is too cramped for thumb.
-
So you move backwards with your thumb?
You're right. Not worth the hassle and I guess I'm more used to WASD than I thought.
I had not thought of that. Sprinting and crouching was pretty awkward. As for that other guy, that's not a level I'll ever reach. -
I actually use Shift to jump and ctrl to crouch. I use space to go prone (or sprint in games that require me to hold it down to sprint). If I can tap-sprint, the button is C. Melee is always V. Z and X are lean (if the game has em). Q is "last weapon" and if that doesn't exist, then "self-heal". E is always use. I'm one of those custom people, but my layouts flow very easily.killkenny1 likes this.

I too like to edit my controls. It's the first thing I do when I launch a new game (among with other settings).

I can't stand when I'm playing a game and a new person comes in (in MULTIPLAYER) and is like, "how do I knife? How do I jump? How do I use killstreaks?"

Starlight5 Yes, I'm a cat. What else is there to say, really?
WSAD or arrows, depends on game.

And then you say which button does one or another thing and they say it doesn't work, and you remember that you remapped most of the controls
.
-
No, I say "I don't use default so I don't know" then they get mad lol
-
WASD
ESDF makes sense because you have more buttons next to it for other use than movement, but at the same time you could easily miss the correct arrow key since its not on the edge of the keyboard.
So WASD makes more sense to me -

That's no fun!
When you give a wrong key dude spends like half an hour complaining why his damn flashlight doesn't work, until some other guy interrupts teh lulz and give him the correct mapping. -
WASD if I absolutely have to use the keyboard but I use my DS4 and Pinnacle Game Profiler whenever possible to avoid having to use the keyboard... If I had an actual desk, I'd prefer keyboard and mouse but keyboard and trackpad is not fun...
And from checking just now, ESDF would result in me hitting the trackpad constantly. I already hit it enough when I'm typing but that would drive me nuts. -
I keep my trackpad disabled 24/7. It's super sensitive XD.
-
Well I would love to do that but I have a TV tray that my laptop sits on... there's no room for a mouse lol.

*remembers Ethrem owns a desktop*

Yeah its not even hooked up at the moment. Besides, my poor 780 Ti can't keep up with my 980Ms...
-
Since Crysis 1 and Warhead never passed 40% on my 780Ms, I'd assume that single-GPU is best for Crysis.
-
Was joking, although when I was younger (pre-teen) I used arrow keys and always wondered why I was terrible at every FPS I played.
Heh I haven't touched my Clevo in like 3 months. Then when I finally went to do something good for it yesterday (upgrade OS drive to Extreme Pro), let's just say dumb me forgot I wiped the image off of my external HDD and I no longer had any backup SSDs kicking around. Literally 30 seconds after I secure erased the original OS drive I realized my error...
Anyway long story short SysPrep saved the day somewhat, but still need to tweak the Clevo.
Also it's amazing what hardware changes Windows 7 will tolerate and still boot. I threw my desktop SSD into the Clevo just for lulz (and in desperation) and it booted to desktop just fine. Obviously threw a few errors but no blue screens, ran like butter and could even game after reinstalling the display drivers.Last edited: Mar 14, 2015killkenny1 likes this. -

Lol, same here. Once I moved to using WASD everything started to make sense! -
You need to OC CPU (Crysis is dual-core optimized) or crank up the SGSSAA. The default SLI profile scales great for me on my GPU-bound 650M SLI setup. Sits at 95-99% usage on both cards.

WSAD for shooters.. In some plane games, I use the arrow keys...

^is that the Saitek PZ45 you have there? Owned one myself years ago and really made the flight sim experience that much more enjoyable. Set one stick to throttle, another to flaps, and the last one to spoilers I believe.

It seems so, although I only know them by Flight Pro product line name.
I used the same setup as you until I bought a second quadrant (everything else I got for free from a buddy of mine
). Now I have separate controls for thrust and RPMs for both engines as well as flaps and spoilers.

ESDF. More buttons.
-
Years ago in QWTF I decided to go with ASDX so I'd gain w for some function. That has stayed ever since and works fine since I only rarely retreat
-
LOL really? You want to throw jibes at me? Here's one
NOOB LAPTOP! GO SUCK MONKEY BALLS!
Just joking.. I could get your set up however I have no space in my house... Honestly only need a Joystick tbh for BF4.. although, I have gotten very skilled controlling the A-10, AH-6 with my mouse and keyboard
-
WASD for me. ESDF makes total sense and makes me question the last 20 years of my life.
-
360 controller for racing & WASD for everything, no compromise at all
!!
-
I never knew esdf was a thing. Now that I look at it... it kind of makes sense. However, I usually like to pinky the depressed spot in the caps lock key to ensure my hand placement is solid. It would through me off.
-
I use YTGH. Being Y forward and G back. It puts my left arm and hand in a more comfortable position.
-
CptXabaras Overclocked, Overvolted, Liquid Cooled
WSAD, since many years. I'm so used to it that even at work, when i'm on the keyboard, my hand just sits there naturally, on W, S, A, D, pinky on the shift, thumb on the spacebar... has become kind of a rest position for my hand when i'm not typing

I used to play with ESDF in Aion because the skillbars were so loaded I needed as many keybindings as possible apart from the numbers and F-keys for an easier access. Otherwise always WASD.
WASD or ESDF?
