I have a desktop pc with 3970X@5GHz and TitanXP.
usually i can only use my small 14" laptop with a bad, unestimated, uglyborn GT 750M
but at he end, how many games i can t play with my terrible underpowered laptop ?
The witcher 3, titanfall2,Watch dogs2. that s all.
90% of my games library is totally playable
50% of my library (with all the most played games on steam) are playable MAXED OUT.
when you upgrade, you need to have one game in mind, what s your game ?

I personally dunno why ... I bought the gtx980m in a time where I wasn't playing anything & the status is still the same ... Nonetheless, I am entertaining the idea of upgrading to 1070 with no reason whatsoever to do this upgrade ... I believe it is like an addiction

I don't usually have an actual game in mind anymore when I upgrade. I just love having a top of the line system with the latest tech in it. Weather it be a desktop replacement machine that can run anything at max settings, or a tiny portable that I can use anywhere.
I am trying to slow down though. I used to buy a new laptop every month or two, I am down to a few a year now, but would like to just upgrade every couple years or so eventually. I'm always thinning the "herd" of laptops I have by selling off the least used ones.ChanceJackson and i_pk_pjers_i like this. -
When I built my desktop I did not have any specific game in mind. I just wanted to blow my friends out of the water. Mind you, I've been mercilessly ribbed by them since I used to only buy laptops. It was the greatest and funniest feeling when I entered their domain, and I purchased two Titan XPs for my first build, and their eyebrows raised and their shoulders sagged a little bit.

When i was working and had lots of cash i upgraded all the time. Basically cant buy and play new AAA games. I also have a gt 750m and it plays older games like a champ.

At this point in time, you could have gotten by with a 970m for the last two years and been fine, and still been fine. There really isn't anything all that demanding unless you insist on ultra high resolution and details.
It's surprising what you can live with when you can't really afford the latest and greatest. My laptop has a 970m and still runs every game just great. Granted it's not my primary gaming machine like it used to be (use my desktop primarily now), but it still holds its own when it needs to. I expect another 1-2 years out of it easily. -
-
Pretty much this. Back then when i was in grade school i used to game on IGPs running everything on low settings until i started buying laptops with dedicated GPUs and looking back at it now i still cant believe i did that lol
Personally i have no reason to upgrade because im not much of a gamer anymore and a lot of newer games dont interest me at all so its waste of money to me. My 750m still handle games like a champ: GTA IV + EOLC, GTA V, Wolfenstein: The New Order, Far Cry 3 & 4, Valve games like TF2, L4D2, CS:GO, and some others im not going to list. I heard Battlefield 1 will run well on it so i might give that a try someday. Only upgrade imma do is getting an SSD finally since they're cheap these days and use my current HDD as a data drive.Aroc likes this. -
Modding. Then again this is my main machine, so it must do whatever I want it to. Plays most of my games fine, eventually would get that GPU upgrade and cooling done - future-proofing (these ever so tempting AAA titles). Why upgrading instead of getting a new machine? 16:10! Then would be a desktop. Too frustrated where the laptop industry is going.
-
<- A poor lad, still studying, still using an iGPU laptop since 2011, still working like a champ except for gaming, can't run my favorite games (mostly racing, Need For Speed and Forza) without having to turn everything off/down, and play at 800x600 - 20-25fps.
An upgrade to a laptop with at least the GTX 1060 will be heavens for me, after all these years of attempting the latest games at 20fps. I'd call my next upgrade a consolation prize for all the suffering I've had! Yes, it's true I have no reason to get a high end laptop and GPU if I'm going to most of the time do light school work and programming, but all I need is cash and dedication to go all out and bang my wallet. XD

This is the wrong way to approach required PC specs.
-CPU requirements jump at the beginning of a console cycle and plateau soon after. This has been fairly consistent PS2/Xbox - 3GHz Pentium, PS3/360 - Intel C2D 2.4GHz, PS4/XB1 - i5 2500.
-The flagship GPU of the 1st new architecture after console gen launches is approximately what that console gen's ports will need. +points if it a new DX [...or other API]. 8800GTX [G80]/8800GT [G92] covered most ports of PS3/360 games, HD 7970/GTX 680 covers most PS4/XB1 ports.
-If you're 4-5 years into the console cycle, a "bang4buck" midrange gaming laptop is the smart choice, there is no future proofing when there's very little future left.Prototime likes this. -
Still able to run a lot of gams and max a lot with my 680M, I am a cheap so.. I only upgrade when necessary, and like to push my things to their upper limits before giving up.
Also, I have a good project in mind.. thinking of making use of my old Xbox Classic case and turning it into the strongest mini (maybe micro) ATX build ever. -

And I'm still chugging along with my LGA 771 Xeon build and a Quadro 5000
Though I have to replace a few bulged caps and hopefully it'll serve me for another year or two till I can afford two Zen builds, one for me, one for my sis.triturbo likes this. -

Well, there came some points where my D900F's 280M started being incapable of gaming well; 1GB vRAM with multiple monitors plus such an old architecture didn't play many of the newer games I was playing at the time, like random FPS drops in Black Ops 2 and the fact that I had to run BF3 in a 720p window on minimum graphics and still dipped below 30fps often. But I did not consider an upgrade until the machine would randomly turn off under heavy load.
Same with my existing 780M setup. I didn't consider getting a new system, though newer titles have not been the best experience, especially when they didn't support mGPU well. I like 60fps, and I could not no matter what I did get it in Dark Souls 3 for a good example, nor could I make use of my 120Hz screen for a large amount of newer games.
I'm all well and good with turning things down, but there does come a point where I'd want an upgrade. I like things at 120fps at least, and I do quite a bit more than just game. If I had the money, I wouldn't even joke about this, I'd have bleeding edge hardware almost all the time (almost, like not going from a 5960X to a 6950X... that's just a waste of money). But it's always been a necessity case for me =D. I'd like to say I've been rather lucky being able to get mostly high end hardware each time I've gotten a laptop, though I always had some help. This time though... this time I'm going to not own socks when I turn it on.i_pk_pjers_i and jaug1337 like this. -
I got 8 years out of my XPS m1730 playing most of the games I wanted to. It had a upgrade journey in it's lifetime, but looking at it now if I had bought it with the specs I have it at now (which I could have only got it speced this way in late 2008) it would have been a $3500 laptop, which struggles to play most of the major titles from after 2013. So i decided to finally move on, I was gonna try and make it through 2017 before buying, just playing through a lot of my old library for the year, but I saw a good price on the Acer V nitro and decided to grab it. Prob won't get 8 years out of this acer, but if I can make it into summer 2018 it was a good investment, if it goes even longer then even better, and if it were to break and I can get parts for it then it might get fixed.
-
Oh wow I remember buying my first laptop, which was the m1530.... but I tried to save up for the m1730, my budget was just too small for it
-
My first laptop upgrade happened so I could play Oblivion xD
Then Skyrim
Now waiting to see what specs ME Andromeda needs to max out!
Honestly crazy high FPS does not make that much of a difference to me though. Once I'm over 45ish fps I cant tell a difference. -
I still have my first personal laptop from around 1998. Compaq presario from best buy for $2200. I remember I got it because it came with GPU that had 8MB vram lol. It could play games and I was trying to get out of the console cycle where I had to start over with games every few years and store all of them, rebuy a bunch of controllers, and was a pain to get them out all the time just to play an older game.
-
Mass Effect Andromeda. Bring it.

Yeah I got it only because I was kinda forced too, I had no real need at the time since my m1710 was still playing all the games I wanted to play with relative ease. It was my senior year of high school and my parents always bought us laptops for our senior year so we had one going into college, my dad saw that the m1730 was out, new I had a m1710 and bought me the m1730. I was actually interested in the m1330 since I was wanting something a bit more portable then my m1710, ohh well. The M1730 was able to be upgraded to a much higher performance spec then m1710 so it was able to last me a lot longer, but it forced me to use my m1710 like a "portable" system in all it's 8lb glory(least it could get 3 hours of battery). New system is 2.5 lbs lighter than the m1710 and 4 lbs lighter than the m1730 and gets 4 hours of battery life, very nice upgrade for the money.

I want your M1730 , thing looks sweeter than anything Dell has cranked out in recent history (bar Alienware)jaug1337 likes this.

you can find them pretty cheap on ebay, they pop up at $200-250 every once in awhile. It's crazy people try to sell them with my config for $800, I just bought my v Nitro for $900 and it's light years more powerful. If you do get a m1730 be careful they are a handful, make sure you run bios A11 so your graphics card last longer then 4 months.

After standard MXM went away I upgraded my P170-SMA w/ 880M to a 980M because I had it available.
Then I built a desktop with ebay parts for about $400 (E5-1650) and slapped in a 1070 (not so super cheap, but hey...) LOVE the desktop. Use the laptop when I travel.

My 1st laptop was a sager 2090 8-9 years ago now. After that I use upgraded with used laptops that where 1 year old or so. I usually bought some used laptop every 2 years or so. 2 month ago I bought my 1st new laptop in 9 years, the Eurocom F5. This laptop will last me at least a good 3 years or longer if the gpu can be upgraded more.

Haha speak for yourselves, I'm still rocking my y410p (which is pretty much the same as my y400). I'll upgrade to some awesome desktop when games I want to play just don't run on this laptop anymore, but so far things are looking good. Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Overwatch, The Witcher, Path of Exile, Dark Souls, GTA, etc they all work with medium/high settings and above at 900p. For the portability and low initial cost, I'd say I'm getting more than my money's worth out of this little laptop.
-
I want to upgrade because I want to run Ultra Modded Skyrim with a stable 60 FPS so right now I'm saving up money to get a GTX 1080 (laptop).

We're always upgrading, because game development is always upgrading. Technology is far from stagnation, so it is easy to be left behind, if your goal is to play games at maximum visual fidelity.
My path in laptop GPUs has been 8600M GT DDR2 -> 9800M GT -> GTX 260M -> HD 6970M -> GTX 780M -> GTX 980M -> GTX 1070
I think I've done pretty well, only upgrading when there would be a significant performance increase. The leap from 9800M to 260M wasn't much, but the motherboard holding the latter was in the first ever quad core compatible laptop.
Truth be told, the majority of these changes came due to a hardware failure, and it made more sense to just buy a whole new laptop, versus repairing the old one.
I'm probably going to sit on this GTX 1070 for a long time. This card has so many years of 1080p gaming left in it, I'll be content for a long time. The only reason I upgraded from the GT72 w/ 980M was because of MSI's trade in program giving me a GT73VR for $900.jaug1337 likes this. -

I am not upgrading.
Still have with me my two laptops in signature from 2011. Still working beautifully with latest games.
I aim for 30fps and the rest is history.

Mine is 11/07 - SLI 8600m GT, 5/09 - 9800m GTS, 4/10 - HD 5870m, 12/14 - GTX 980m,... ??/202?.
That MSI BS pisses me off. -
OP, you're right. It's usually for a specific game. In my case, that would be Battlefield 1....even though to be honest it runs fine right now, with compromises and in the 30-40 FPS range on a 1080p display. However, that isn't nearly good enough for the PC master race, lol.
Another good reason to upgrade is a recent jump in hardware technology. Right now, you can get 1 or 2 desktop grade GPUs in a laptop that has a 1440p display with Gsync and a high refresh. That's insane. That's enough of a difference to justify an upgrade IMO. -
I really don't plan on upgrading my first desktop build anytime soon, probably within the next 2-4 years.
-
I think that 3 years-old period is enough, if you like to play newest productions.

it's less so a game that I have in mind, and more that I aim to meet/exceed VR recommended specs of desktop parts:
i5-4590
GTX 970
RX 480
I already have the 1070 MXM so if If all goes well with my Frankenstein laptop build a full dive into VR is the next stop for me
