Hi,
first of all, sorry for not beeing a native English speaker, but I hope you can understand me.
I have a vry urgent issue:
today i got a new Notebook "Asus G72GX" the famour one with a built-in Geforce 260M GTX with 1 GB DDR3 Ram. A core2duo with 2,55 MHz (not overclocked) and 6 GB ram and Windows 7.
The only game I play is World of Warcraft and I was deepely disappointed, when I run my first wow tests.
If everything is at ultra (except shadow) I get only 35 FPS in the cities and below 30 FPS in ICC 10 men raid. And also in 5man dungeons it was a very poor performace. I use the latest nvidia drivers and the pre installed windows 7.
If I put the details to medium I get a little bit more fps.
The next aspect is, that I would like to record my raids. so I started fraps today and tried to record the 10men Nax run, but it was not possible. The FPS broke down to below 20 and I don't know why. I used an external USB2.0 HDD for storing the raw movie.
A friend have got a HP DV-7 notebook with an ATI4650 graphics card and he can set everything to ultra (except the shadows) and he can record 10er raids without any problems.
Can anybody tell me, where is the button for the performance boost on my notebook -)?
I have no glue, what I should change to get a better performace.....currently I think to send the notebook back and to live with my two years old MacBook Pro.
Any hints are very welcome.
Cheers,
Prandros

Fraps will cut your fps in half, so you need at least 50 fps to have a smooth fraps.
-
Yes, I know....the problem isn't fraps, the problem is more the first apsect, that WOW is very slow on this (or especially on my) high-end gaming notebook.
Cheers,

Do you have shadows turned on? Shadows kill framerate. Also, turn down your view distance. You should be able to do 25 mans with no problem, though you will need to tweak things a bit.
What resolution are you trying to run at?
The implementation of shadows and the higher texture quality with WotLK has killed performance for a lot of people. Tweak that and you should be fine to raid. -
The Resolution is 1600x900 and the distance is middle. The shadows are turned off...
I have got the same settings like my friend with the AT 4650....and he has got also windows 7 and no problems..
I use the usual raid addons...maybe I should delte all addons and put the step by step again into the game to see, whch addon causes the performance loss.
Thank you for the quick reply. -
Is your laptop set to performance mode in windows 7? Also what gpu driver version are you using? >.> also hate to be a downer but your laptop is kind of known to have heating issues, can you also post back with your temps while gaming "not after you close the game. Running hwmonitor in the background while gaming would also work as it will show us the highest temps.
-
the G7x series is actually supposed to run a fair bit cooler, as its a bigger system with more room for airflow. iirc most of the G72GX owners were getting mid70s to low 80s (81-83).
-
I love shadows in games but they kill fps

I use the latest NVIDIA driver for windows 7 (195.62) and I enabled the overclocking mode in Windows 7 (in the section of the power management).
I will record the temperature and post the data in few minutes.
Thank you so far.... -

Please find my temperature data recorded while playing wow.
Hardware monitor ACPI

Hardware monitor Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo P8700

Temperature 1 43°C (109°F) [0x39] (Core #1)
Hardware monitor NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M
Temperature 0 68°C (154°F) (GPU Core)

H.A.L. 9000 Occam's Chainsaw
Those are pretty good temps, you should be good for a pretty decent overclock.

Hi,
I don't want to overclock directly, first thing I would like to get is a good performance without overclocking while playing wow.
I think I will install 3dmark2005 and I will post the results to have comparable data. -
are you sure the notebook is running in max performance mode? check your power options, your playing on battery right?
also try dl'ing rivatuner and see if your 3d clocks are what they should be at for your gpu.
perhaps your encountering some driver issues with downclocking, I was running the same drivers as you on my i7 rig and the drivers were downclocking all over the place.
i had to install the new beta 195.81's, to eliminate this. -
>>check your power options, your playing on battery right?
I am playing on a/c power and I enabled performance mode within windows7.
I will run 3dmark05 and post the numbers..... -
Here is my 3dmark05 number "14294 3DMarks"
This is very similar to the value from other people, thus I suspect, that my wow performance issues are wow specific.....
Hm....I have no idea....
But the 3dmark05 results show, that I don't need to overclock or to change system drivers or system controlls like power savings mode or so...I have enabled max power mode without overclocking.....
Maybe I should look deeper into wow to find the root cause of the issues.....
*§$§I$Z".....crapy.... -
It looks like your system's running perfectly fine, might just be a problem with your WoW install. Try reinstalling it, or maybe look for an update/patch?
Btw, a high end gaming laptop just to run WoW? :S -
Sorry, don't quote me on this. But don't some people have (possibly) better performance with vsync turned off?
Worth a try anyway. -
I would try to upgrade to the 195.81's, did you install RivaTuner to see if your cards are downclocking in WoW?
Downclocking is not always heat related, the drivers could be bugged out.
See if you can find a copy of EVGA Precision and add GPU clocks to the OSD, fire up WoW and see what your clocks are. See if they ever get downclocked.
Also, in your NV CP check what the performance state is set to adaptive or max perf; try the latter and see if that helps. -
His gaming notebook would pwen the game without a OC.... You need to update the game and your video drivers...
-
I agree that the system is more than capable of dealing with WoW.
I recommend you install the 186.81 Nvidia drivers from their webpage for your gpu (remove the latest drivers, and clean up the residual drivers with 'Driver Sweeper' in Safe Mode.
Check if your laptop is set to running in Performance Mode.
Remove all extra bloatware (if there is any) that came with the OS that might be slowing down the system.
Update/patch the game. -
