    Hi,

I just bought a used 17" XPS Intel Centrino 2.0 with 2 gigs of ram to mainly play WOW on and be able to get my feet wet with AoC on lower settings. It has an Nvidia 256 dedicated graphics card. I know that was more then enough computer for wow and heard it should be able to handle AoC on low settings fine. As soon and I put in the first WOW disk I got an error I've never seen before. Said something like Your computer failed to meet minimum CPU speed. I since found out that the Centrinos try to save power by running at adaptable speeds from 800 MHz to full speed of 2.0 GHz.

Sometimes I'm listed at 798 MHz which is basically the 800 minimum needed for WOW but it triggers the error message. I went into BIOS and saw that the 800 MHz is an unchangable setting. Please help. I finally gave up and clicked the Install anyways, spend 3 hours and hope for the best button. I'm in the middle of that 3 hours now, and had time on my hands so thought I'd be productive and ask the fine nice brainiac powers that be on here for advice.

I know that most notebook processors are designed to automatically downclock to a more power efficient speed when running on battery power. You may also want to check the power settings on your computer. However, running WoW on an 800MHz processor shouldn't be too bad since you are using an nVidia GeForce 7 Series chipset. I run it on a 1GHz Pentium III with less than the minimum RAM but use a 128MB ATi Radeon 9200LE video card and it runs rather well.

Yes, the Geforce Go 7800 GTX was a high-end card for its time and comes with a 256-bit memory bus type.

Thank you all for the replies, you are so kind to help those of us who are clueless in cyberspace.

I have the XPS plugged in all the time. I'll avoid using the batteries till a time when that is the only option. I'm aware these 17" laptops suck power and kill batteries at warp speed.

Wow did finally install fine it appears. It was just very annoying that I thought I was buying a powerhouse for wow and it was rejected as soon as I put in the first disk. I know, it's yesterdays (3 years ago) power house, but for me that's fine. I have no desire to spend thousands on a laptop nor the cash. This one cost $700 plus $50 shipping (US). I only buy from sellers on ebay that are insured by paypal for more then what I'm purchasing. I learned about the $200/$2000 paypal insurance the almost hard way. I bought a laptop previously that was bad and the seller refused to take it back. Paypal forced them. Luckily, they were insured for the $2000 so even if they refused to recieve it, paypal would have deducted their funds out of their account and I'd get to keep the buggy laptop as well. Needless to say, I tried to pi$$ them off so they'd reject it :D but no luck. I did get them to quit Ebay though. They had sold 74 laptops and had no idea to check for conflicts in the device manager before shipping out a laptop. 73 happy and very lucky customers and then there was me. Plus, screen had a line on it from the inside only visible if not looking head on. They accused me of lying, threatened to sue me for breach of contract. Luckily, I have a best friend who's an ex judge and pointed out that they were bullchitting and got them to realize that being so stupid to threaten someone over the internet created documented evidence that could get them disbared if they were indeed a lawyer.

Sorry for the rambling. Just wanted to let others know it's safe to buy laptops on ebay but only from sellers that are showing $2000 paypal insurance and of course, not spending over $2000 on it ;oP

It will show a little under the sellers name how much paypal insures them for it's either $200 (which is everyone as soon as they become a seller) or $2000 which requires 98 % happy camper rating or better on about 70 feedbacks. (2 strikes and you're out)

Oh and never pay by cashier's check or personal check. Pay by paypal. Otherwise, it can be hard to collect I believe. If you sell, never ship to non paypal addresses or send item before funds have cleared. Popular trick is to say they only release funds once the tracking info is given. Don't fall for it. And put a "no shipments to Nigeria" in large bold caps and you'll save yourself tons of headaches.

Hope this all helps someone get a nice decent laptop cheap like I did or avoid losing one. Take care all.
