ex-AD&D 2ed player here is feeling the bug again a thinking about getting into WOW.
a little disappointed to see no multi class options available...
i was always more interested in the role playing side and not the monte hall style of play but have always investigated game mechanics in order to tweak my characters to make them formidable enough to survive...
which class/race combo do u guys suggest for a beginner... what are ur strategies to tweak characters out..

There's not much to say... It's a pretty straight forward game.
Pick the class that seems the most fun to you is the best thing I'll tell you.
The race you pick doesn't really matter all that much. The racial abilities won't make that much of a difference.
I was an Undead Warlock. I picked Undead for Will of the Forsaken. And Warlock was the one class I never got sick of playing.
So pick a class and a race that seem fun to you and try it out. If you don't like it just try again. Don't play something because someone told you to.
I knew some people who played priests because their real life friends needed a healer. And he was stuck healing with his priest in our 40 man raids even though he didn't like it much. -
the game is easy to solo. every class can solo, so pick the one that you think is the most *fun*

Personally I found some more adept at soloing than others. My night elf hunter is supremely good at it and my human paladin is also pretty good with rock solid healing spells and super-hard mail armour. I found the druid to be a bit lacking in that satisfying domination and the mage while fun does kick out a lot of damage but seems a bit limited.
I think my Paladin is my favourite but I've never tried a shaman or warlock so I couldn't say. I also found the warrior to be incredibly boring and the priest really has to rely on others for a lot of quests.
Just my 2p. Hope you have fun! -
The druid is slow to start. He picks up passed level 30.
I found the warrior to be awesome as well. I only got mine to mid 40's but I loved to tank in instances.
Warlock and Mages can get annoying when you solo since you have to get your mana back after a few fights. But I loved my warlock so much. -
Tip one: Delete character.
Tip two: Uninstall.
Tip three: Cancel account.
You're welcome. -
I've only played WoW for a few months and started an Undead Mage, reason behind that is I rather cast spells then engage in hand to hand combat, just think about what type of character you would like; dps, healer, tanker etc. -
i'm a night elf - warrior. I love my character except she runs so slow - stupid big ears
It is basically a straight forward game as other suggested. I suggest to try out different characters. If you don't like one, you can always change to another. You'll see in the beginning if you like it or not, so you won't waste so a lot of time on it. -

Well, pallys are okay. The problem is they are very gear based characters. Without good gear, you will not be very effective.
Really, there may not be true multi classing, but the trees provide somewhat of a multiclass. For instance paladins (for which I know the most about) have trees that allow you to become a heavy tank, a really powerful healer or a **** fine warrior type. True, you will never be as strong as a rogue or a fury warrior (unless you have **** good equipment) but you can play around and get different results. Kind of like having a warrior wiht a few levels of cleric
Warlocks are generaly considered harder to play "well" but they are easily the most powerful character in PVP. Followed by the rogue. Hunters are a blast and allow you to solo pretty well. Plus the pet makes for a nice off tank in instances.
Warriors... failry easy and straight forward. Also extremely equipment dependant like a paladin. But they're decently fun and easy to play. Don't have much experience with mages.
IMHO, horde have MUCH better racial traits. The alliance have really really bad racials. They're a joke...
Oh yeah.. shamans are pretty badass. Considered to be EZ mode
Priests are a ***** to solo... but oh so useful, and you will probably never find yourself lacking a group needing you. However, they can be a nightmare to play in large raids, when trying to keep track of health of 10-20 people.
Druids... dunno... I hate them. But the expansion pretty much made them a nightmare.
I love my paladin, but I need him to be regeared. He heals for a ton, and can replace a priest, but playing one can be kind of difficult. You will be healing and probably off tanking as well as pulling aggro off the softies. It can get quite hectic. I also find leveling them to be slow... especially if your'e holy or prot geared.
Pure Ret specced pallys fair pretty well, but their healing... not so much.
*edit*
Be aware... Pally's are pretty big PVP targets since most classes can take pallys down (especially in later levels). Warlocks. OWN. EVERYTHING. when I get in group pvp fights, either in world of battlegrounds, I'm the first one they go for, as I can keep a bunch of people going long enough to wipe larger groups.
And if you play a gnome... Especially a gnome mage... Plan on getting targeted a lot. Horde HATE gnomes. And ifyouer' a mage... it's even worse. I think it's required that every PVP realm have a guild with the name "gnome punters" or some such.
Whatever class you play, pay attention to what the forums say and what your guildies recommend. -
what makes a warlock that much more powerful than a mage?
what's everybody's beef w/Gnomes? -
Lets see here, Warlocks.....as a 60 Warlock(I stopped playing on it in Janurary, rerolled as a Mage since...was in Tier 1/2 as well
)
1. Death Coil, aka 'Win-Coil'
2. Chain Fear
3. DOTS DOTS AND MORE DOTS
4. Minion to do his/her bidding....Imp=Dmg/+Life, Voidwalker=Sacrificial shield, etc.
5. SoulStone+Healthstone = 2nd life + 1200 free heal
6. Warlocks = Massive Stamina = Massive life. At 60 most tanks(Warriors) have 5000~ life, a Warlock has 4600~. Warlocks = caster ranged unit.
7. Damage over time. Even if you kill the Warlock, it's DoTs(Damage over Time) will kill you heh.
Just a small list.
Oh heres a small video on balance, amusing for those who understand it

Edit: and why Gnomes are hated? It's just that they are so puntable(They are small and people want to punt them), no real reason besides that haha. Ive seen a guild called 'Gnome Punters' on my server as well
-
Yeah, pretty much. They're just... badass.
My friend can hit his normal casts for 1k damage. He can crit his spells for 3-4k damage. There have been locks that have hit for over 10k.
Plus fear... They fear and DoT you. And you die. Nothing you can do. -
Haha, I love how straightforward that was.
Locks are my fav by far. -

My human Paladin owned a dwarf paladin 5 levels above in a duel the other day... but then I am loaded and have some really rather tasty armour/weapons etc.
-
Ret pally Jess?
I'm fond of pallies but I hate Blood Elves, so right now, since I'm horde, I'm sad :*( -
Alliance FTW.
For me, its hard to beat humans and dwarfs.
Search your feelings Cori, know the the dark side will grant you power. Hehe. -

Retribution Spec'ed, or Holy or Protection. In talent tree
Alliance is okay, but the Horde have better races and racial... -
Racials smacials.
Hah. Nah I just like the atmosphere the alliance gives off in the cities and the people. The Horde however, seems MUCH more organized in the battlegrounds that I have played. I guess the alliance attracts noobies like me, and horde carries some of the more experienced players due to the racials. -
I guess, plus, newbies look at the races...
Mmmmm, pretty race(aka Alliance) or ugly one(Horde). Though Horde has BEs now but still heh.
Racials do help quite a bit, for example, Taurens have bonus life and aoe stun, really useful as a warrior, Orcs have their enrage which is an awesome boost to damage, resists to stun/etc.
Night Elf rogues, lets see, 1% bonus to dodge. That's also known as 1% more chance for a Horde Warrior to critically Overpower -

What does that make me?
The other day I kept having to resurrect a mage in my party a level higher than me who kept getting killed my dragon whelps a level above her, wheras I was aggro'd by three all at least one level above me and (with the help of a same-level warlock) killed them all and stayed alive. Is that just mail armour or was the mage just pants? -
Which talent tree do you have most of your points in Jess?
By the way: For the Horde! -
moon angel Notebook Virtuoso NBR Reviewer
Erm... I'd have to check, not sure I'm even that far in to the talent tree to be honest! Only level 19!
-
Oooh. Haha okay then. You're not far enough in the tree yet to be called something.
What talents are you aiming to get as you level? -
moon angel Notebook Virtuoso NBR Reviewer
The good ones? I'd definitely like to keep the healing up as so few characters seem to have healing spells! Holy generally seems to be good so i'll keep that for sure. Other than that I don't know.
-
Haha well you can look at the WoW forums for good talent speccs.
Or play around with a talent calculator to find a specc that you like.
Or maybe I was too hardcore into WoW and I should just shut up and let you enjoy the game.
WOW tips please
