I have a 8400 GS that I was able to OC using Nvidia software on stock drivers. I decided to upgrade to 163.44 and realized I couldn't OC with those so I went back to the 15x.xx drivers. However, I still couldn't OC so I completely uninstalled all video drivers with the Windows utility and Driver cleaner. Right now I have 158.22 and can't OC with the Nvidia program or Rivatuner, so does anyone know WTF is wrong? ( I have reinstalled the stock drivers and still can't OC)

Try uninstalling the drivers, use Driver Cleaner Pro, then reinstall 15x.xx drivers.
If that don't work, lemme know. -

Yes try DriverCleaner Pro, there could have been a couple of registry keys left behind by the newer un-overclockable drivers which were not deleted/overwritten by the older set you installed after.
-
ok i'll try it and report back, thanks
-
I ran Driver cleaner Pro then installed 158.22 but i still can't OC with either the Nvidia software or AtiTool
-
I'm pretty sure you need to use a 101.xx driver to OC, at least that's how it is for my 8600m GT.
-
just ran driver cleaner again and still can't OC with 101.17
-
I just uninstalled through device manager, restarted, installed the 101.19 drivers, restarted and was able to overclock. If driver cleaner isn't working either then that seems odd. Maybe you have to reformat or something.
-
would that be a sure way to clean the drivers? I really don't feel like doing that, but if it'll work I'd be willing to give it a shot.
-
it is the same for me. when i try to overclock it just resets back to default value. no matter what drivers i use

bump......

If your willing there is still a bios level overclock option. Its abit extreme but its an option.
-
ehhh, i'd rather not. There has to be some other solution
-
Can you do a System Restore back to when you had the original (overclockable) drivers installed? If you can't, then just do a clean OS install.
-
That was like a month and a half ago, so I might have to try and re-install the OS.
-
lol reinstalling the os doesnt help. ive tried
-
If you were able to OC with stock OEM drivers originally, then doing a clean reformat and reinstall will allow you to OC again.
-
You're using Driver Cleaner in safemode right? That's the only way it can clean everything out.
-
No i'm in regular mode, I'll try it in safe.

Same exact problem on my dell vostro 1500's 8400m GS.
I wanted to upgrade stock drivers to 158.22,
so i uninstalled, used Driver Cleaner in safe mode,
installed ATI tool, didnt work, kept going back to default clocks.
reinstalled Rivatuner, same problem.
wtf is wrong?!!!!!!!! -
i think we got pwned by Nvidia
-
Were you ever able to overclock? If so, what drivers were you using?
-
we were using the stock drivers for XP that came with the dell vostro 1500 (101.28)
And yes, I had absolutely no problems overclocking, and saw significant increases in 3DMark05 scores.
I think the problem is just with these drivers for XP.
I've been looking for a good site that lists overclockable nvidia drivers for XP but cant find any. Can someone help? -
agh just to let you know, when I DID finally get to OC my 8600m GT, I found that the results really weren't worth the effort. I went with the 101.38 drivers (non-OC 3dmark 06: 3700) and when I OC'd to 590/800 (DDR3 version) my score went up to 4150. However, with the 163.44 drivers I get 3905 with no overclock and in-game performance only dropped about 3fps from the OC'd 101.38 driver. I'd just go with a new 163.xx driver for now and wait for them to be able to overclock (on a software level). Plus bioshock wouldn't even run for me with the older driver.

Maybe it's different with the 8400 because I saw a pretty significant difference in game.
WTH? I can't overclock?
