Depends on your drivers and monitor and whether the game supports that resoution. What OS, video card, and driver are you using?

One thing you can try is going to windows screen resolution window and under advanced settings for "adapter" click "list all modes" and see if that resolution shows up.

Also in that same window, select the "monitor" tab and deselect the "hide modes that this monitor cannot display" checkbox. This will open up more available modes.

Finally, I know with nVidia control panel you can create custom resolutions if it doesn't exist. It won't necessarily be supported, but you can try. I'm sure ATI has a similar feature.

But again, many games require a minimum vertial or horizontal resolution due to interface design requirements, etc. So it may not work if not supported by the game.

You can try setting it to 1024x768 or 800x600 and setting the Aspect Ratio setting to 16:9. This takes care of HUD stretching, and it's a pretty neat feature.

so set it to a 4:3 resolution, and in the nvidia control panel, do full screen scaling instead of proportional scaling (with the black bars) and set it to 16:9 or 16:10, and the aspect ratio will come out correct? (ie. wide pixels?)

    that is interesting.
